Devol radiator guards

Recommended Posts

I installed my Devol radiator guards tonight and I must say, they are pretty cheesey. There is no bracing in the back of them at all, I really dont see what they will protect in a bad crash. To make things worse, my top bolt holding my plastic louver on was real tight so I used a pair of pliers to hold the tab while I loosened the bolt, when the bolt broke loose the pliers jabbed the radiator putting a hole in one of the tubes, small but leaking none the less. I now have my first dab of JB weld on my bike. ? I will be watching to see what Works and Unibiker come out with.

My Devol radiator guards protect really well. They have taken some big hits and still look like new. Maybe they have changed the design?

I have also just install a set on my bike and now my shrouds seems really wide. Are yours ?

i have a set of devol radiator guards for my 04 yz450f and i like them, they do have a brace behind them and i believe they increase airflow, they have held up flawlessly and i recomend them to all, they also make glide plates, skid plates, brake guards, lowering links, frame protectors, and some pretty trick brake coolers. http://www.devolracing.com/home.htm

im sorry that your pliers slipped and damaged your radiators ?

i hope that the jb weld works for you.

Ive had them on every bike Ive owned, always been real happy with them, but if you notice on the 06 there is nowhere for a rear brace to bolt up. Not bashing Devol at all, they make great products, I just dont think these are gonna help much.

Can you tell by these pictures what might be wrong ?

I did not have any instructions.

The inside lip of the shroud is hitting the bolt that connects the rear support to the edge of the radiator. If you look half way down on the edge of the radiator you will see the screw that is holding the shroud out. Looks like a little trimming on the plastic is all you need to do. I hope this makes sense.

I ran Devol for 2 years on my WR250, liked them alot, held up well, but did take a spill the twisted the guard and the rad up pretty good, rad did'nt leak but had to be straightened and tested fixed guard and back on the bike it went...this year thu I am gonna try the Faltland guards just because I like the added support for the radiator that comes with them, it has a support for the back of the radiator, looks like good stuff...only reason I switched to them..

Last night I installed a set on my 06 and let me start by saying they seem to be very durable and the installation was a breeze. I understand what people are saying about not enough support around the back to protect from the radiator getting pushed in like a radiator brace would do but I dont see that happending anyway becuase it is bolted to the shroud.

I think these guards were desinged to protect form a side impact and also to keep sticks and debris from puncturing the radiator from the front. I will go on record saying that these guards will perform these functions very well.

The fit was ok. The guards themselves fit nicely around the radiators and are braced well so they dont fold in on themselves. The only problem comes from the lower bolt on the shroud that originally bolted into the louver but now bolts into a supplied bracket. In order to reach this bracket with the lower shroud bolt I had to bend the bottom of the shroud about 1 inch (or trim the inside or the shroud which I chose not to do). I dont know how this could have been avoided becuase the original fit between the rad and the shroud was so tight.

So now the outer edge of the shroud bows from top to bottom a total of about 1 inch from stock at its widest point. The difference is almost unnoticeable by eye but I took lots of pictures before and after and during so stay tuned. I will post them up monday (I am going to the trade show in Indianapolis this weekend!!! www.dealerexpo.com).

I have not seen any other iterations or guards for the 06 yet and I dont know how the manufacturers will tie these things into the frame without a big goofy brace unless they use one like roosterperformance does that goes along the front of the frame.

I purchased, installed and returned a set for my 06. Fit was crappy and they did make the bottom of the radiators at least 1" wider on each side, maybe more!

The bottom of the rad shroud is actually dimensionally the same, its about 3-8" above the bottom that bows out a bit. Maybe you installed incorrectly. ?

I ordered mine and the package stated for a 00-02 YZ426F. They made my shrouds bow out quite a bit and you could really notice it when riding. After I trimmed the shrouds, they seem to fit ok now. Since I bought this bike used and it came with black plastics, I was thinking that they might be from a 250F (which should be the same) and perhaps this could be my problem. However, after reading other people having the same issues, it must be the guards. ?
