Need help - strange sound from my 650R

Recommended Posts

I have a new '06 650R and it makes a Jingling / clinking sound, kinda like

a small bell when I just tickle the gas to keep it rolling along. It goes away

if I roll off the gas or bang it open...... anyone know what it could be??

I pulled the shrouds, seat and tank but cant find anything lose.

I don't want to wait for it to one day stop and then look for whats missing ?

Does it do it if you rev it sitting still (in neutral), or just when the bike is in motion?

No... not yet. only while in motion so far. if it would do that I could locate it...

???drive chain/sprocket???

I thought it could be, because the CS has quite a bit of play in it (in and out

play) that would cause the CS sproket to float and maybe jingle wile not under

load... but I hear that the play is normal, so you all should hear it too ?

Thanks for the input so far though... this is driving me cazy, I keep expecting

something to fall off ?

It has to have something to do with the drive system then. If you have been messing around with the front sprocket, make sure you have it mounted with the boss sticking out, otherwise the chain will ride close to the vertical frame member and scape it up. If you have a good solid stand, get the bike up off both wheels while its running. Pop it in gear and keep your hand ready on the clutch. Listen around while the rear wheel is spinning.

Great idea, thanks Snaggle, I have a motojack I'll run it on it tonight.

BTW the sprocket was mounted by the dealer... it could be wrong ?

Do you have aluminum bark busters on the bike? If so check to make sure your manual decompressor lever is not touching the bark buster. It makes the sound you are describing and it sounds like it is coming from the engine. ?

When it's making this sound just place your finger lightly on the decompressor lever. If the noise stops your peace of mind will be restored.
