Just had to share some pics.
My '83 Maico 490 Sand Spider and my '02 XR650R.

Anybody else here love 2-stroke open bikes besides their XR's?

I always wanted a Maico. I'm a big/heavy dude. The radial fins look cool. I didn't know they made a late model with mono shock. How does the power compare ?

The Maico eats the XR for lunch, at least subjectively. When it gets into the zone it just explodes and wants to rip your arms out of their sockets.
This is the five speed desert version, it's fast on top as well.
When these came out, magazine testers wrote it pulled "like a freight train on nitrous oxide", and that about sums in up.

The Maico has much better suspension when going through the whoops, it handles better and is lighter/much more nimble. The XR has better high speed stability.

You can change the entire top end on an air cooled Maico in less time than it takes to change a spark plug on the XR. It is incredibly easy and intuitive to work on. The only thing that feels "old" on the 490 is the clutch. It's hard hard to pull, thankfully you just about never need it.

I like the XR for its dual sport and long distance abilities, but the Maico is a much more thoroughbred dirt bike, and a lot more fun.

I've got the 00 650R and 03 CR500AF. Both cool open bikes, the 500 is suprisingly versatile and can do most types of riding and is more exciting to ride than the 650. But the 650 has been good to me, virtually no problems since new and its faster on top.

Does the CR500AF have a five speed transmission?
I have a few spare engines for my Maico, 4-speed MX and 5-speed Sand Spider versions. The 5-speed is definitely as fast as the XR.

I made those myself from bicycle mirrors.

That maico is sweet.

I've been trying to justify picking up an open class two stroke, but might just settle for a 250 two stroke.
