Complete teardown. Any suggestions?

2004 XR 650 L

I am currently doing a complete teardown of my motor to fix a tranny problem. We have to split the cases so it's a major job.

Anyway, the bike already has a hotcam...but the rest of the motor is stock.

What should I upgrade while it's apart??

Clutch, piston, rod, etc etc????

Tranny problem on a 2004, sounds like abuse to me. ?

Replace the first gear with one from an XR600R, much shorter, some magazine did a write up on it not too long ago.

You can do a piston, weisco or other, they are pretty much all the same. Port the head and do a three angle valve job. If it were me, I would do the 715cc kit from L.A. Sleeve, but you'll have to get the cases bored to accept the oversized sleeve.

Not much else to do other than replace things that shouldn't be worn yet.

that or a defect....I would throw a new piston in it and have the ports and valves done....bore it out a little.

Tranny wont shift. Shifter will move up and down while motor is running but it wont change gears.

I'm new to the XR world, so I may be off-base here, but on some other bikes I've owned, this might be a problem with the shift linkage inside the right hand case cover.

There's usually a widgit that grabs (and rotates) the end of the shift drum, and I've seen problems there.

Just a thought, and you can probably check it w/o pulling the engine.
