Just one question. What is the deal on warming up these beasts?? I just bought an 06' 450f,I start it no problem,almost(about 10 minutes to start it), with the choke open, let run for a minute or two. Once I shut off the choke it runs rough, if I give it gas it dies, if I leave it alone it dies. Then to restart it, pull choke, kick, kick, oh wait, let me try this hot start thing, fires up. Well, the hot start worked, must be warmed up, shut off choke, same scenario. What gives. I pretty sure I'm doing something wrong.. Any help??Thanks. Don't bash too much.

must be some jetting problem ..

my 426 never needs more than a half to one minute one the choke ... (well, if its 10 degrees it does´nt run perfect after ½-1 minutes, but it idles well) ....

Try using the choke just to fire it up,then push it in and use just the throttle to warm the engine for a couple of minutes.No throttle before or with the choke out.

The '06 is delivered jetted quite lean, and it's cold in New York right now, yes? That just makes it worse. Search through the forum for '06 jetting recommendations. I believe the pilots are typically being increase to #48's, but I don't recall the main and needle settings.

Thanks guys. It is cold here. Snowing actually. I hope I'm not gonna have to become a climatologist to start this thing. I guess I just have to get used to it. I't does sound mean when it's running, But I'm not sold yet, have to get on the track. Thanks again guys.

i had a slightly similar "problem" with mine, it runs/idles like sh*t cold or even just warm, i start mine and let it warm up for at least 5 mins and then it runs like a dream. even after sitting for a while between rides it needs to be heated back up again. btw, dont slam the throttle while warming it up...rev it nice and slow, thumpers dont react well to quick, large throttle revs while at low rpms.

as for the problem with it not idling, cant give you much help there. id have to blame that on the cold. good luck

What do you mean? Are you saying that they bog or something? Whenver I give quick large throttle revs while at low rpms, I just wheelie....

Keep in mind one thing about thumpers. They completely suck if they are not jetted right. They will stall everywhere, they will just cut-off for no reason, they will be down on power, and they will run hot. But when you do take care of them and keep them jetted, you will never want to go back to a 2 stroke. That is the key to having a 4 stroke. You have to jet it properly and you have to keep it maintained. They will not hesitate to blow up on you if you dont take care of it. First things first. Buy a aftermarket fuel screw. MSR and Zip Ty make good ones. (Try the TT store. They are really good about getting stuff to you fast.) Also, buy a jet kit. Once you get the hang of it, you can jet it in a matter of 30-45 minutes.

Sounds like a jetting problem to me. Adjust the fuel screw out no more than 3 turns from lightly seated. If it needs to be turned out more that 3 turns;then you will need a larger pilot jet. You could also change the starter jet (choke)to a #72;this will help cold starts.

Let me get this straight here. Brand new bike I have to take apart to get it to work?? Think I will wait till I can see dirt, Right now I'm looking at about 24" of snow. We got pounded yesterday and today. I did run it today, but only for a few minutes, seemed ok. But really, I have to change the jetting before I even ride it stock? Well, it gives me a chance to get familiar with taking it apart. Good thing I have the manual. I think the other bikes in my garage are laughing at the new guy that sounds funny.

If there is anyone in NY who has ridden at Island motocross in Yaphank L.I, let me know what you think. I have to drive about 1 1/2 hrs to the worm farm to ride.

These are race bikes....not set up by Yamaha or the dealer to function in all climates and elevations. If your not experienced with jetting a bike properly there are many threads here on TT that can help you out.

I've jetted plenty of bikes, but they have been two strokes. they only needed to be jetted after mods. Bone stock they ran fine. Just a little cautious about jetting it with the weather all screwed up now. I'll wait till I try it on the track. Just new to the 4 stroke world. But thanks I have been going blurry looking at all the different jetting posts, great for info.

we ride with a friend who just bought his 06 450 a week ago and the first ride out his did the same thing, dealer said she would be tempromental for a little while. backfires a bunch too. I thought he bought a lemmon at first.
