IMS Tank Blues

I just got this IMS 4.6gal tank for my new ’06 XR650R.

The joins in the tank are really rough-assed and none
of the holes line up. In fact the tank mounting holes are
so far off that I had to pull on the one side with two hands
to get the bolt to find the front mounting hole.
The right radiator shroud had to be bent over a inch to get the
bottom mounting bolt to line up. The net result is that
the tank now sits off center and the right radiator shroud
is bowed out a bit.

The tank is far enough off center as to cause the seat not to
fit into the tank correctly causing it to be “saggy” on the
one side (see picture).
Also, I’m sure it was fitted to a bike before, there are
marks on the tank where the Brake reservoir has made
contact with the tank, mine is about 3mm from the tank
so it was not me that marked the tank.... this is minor though.
Overall, I am not impressed with my IMS experience at all.
Frankly for $225, I expected something a bit better.

Please give me some input here.... am I being too fussy?
Is this normal and should I be happy with what I've got?
or should I ask for a new one?
Any advice will be appreciated.

There's a part of the shroud to cut off before installing, did you do that?IMS has pretty good customer service so call em and ask for another tank.

Thanks for the response, yes I trimmed off the extra bit. Pretty easy
with a box cutter. I even tried swapping mounting brackets around, but
since they are both the same it made no difference.

I have read a number of horror stories about the IMS tank's fit and finish, so I went with the Clarke. All I can say it is as nice looking as the stock tank and fits perfectly.

Hate to say , but you should have got the clarke ,( which hold s4.8 gal filled to the brim)

the clarke finnish is excellent , and the fit was 100% spot on .

My XRL came with a clark,so I got lucky. I have not read a post yet that didn't have something bad to say about a IMS tank.

Man I've probably had 10 IMS tanks and never had a problem or even had a friend with a bad tank. There was one thing though, I went to change my shrouds out after about a year of scratches and the screws just spun and would not come out. I did not do anything stupid and use loctite on them or anything. I called IMS and they warrantied the tank and sent me a new one.

But did any of them look as bad as mine?? I guess that is the question.
or am I just being too anal ??

I think you got a mold set/third shift tank/monday after holiday or something. Mine fits great, looks great, and works great...... not a problem. You have a brand new bike so I would call them up and get what you payed for.

You have a point, mine have all been either white or natural. Call em, they'll make it right.

I wouldn't think your being anal after seeing these pictures. Fits like crap, finished like crap.
I'd send it back if I'd paid $225 for this work of s**t.

Pain in the ass but worth the effort to get what you paid for...

I hear the IMS white tanks fuel stain after a couple years. I see them on E-Bay alot stained about 1/3 the way from the bottom. I haven't heard of the problem with the Clarke. I'm going with the clarke 4.0 gal for the "L".

Thanks for the input folks, I've sent a copy of this post, in e-mail
form, to the dealer who got the tank for me and told them that I want
a replacement. Lets see what they have to say.

The only snag is that the instructions called for "wash the tank out well
before installing" I used gasoline to wash it out with. I hope that doesnt
void any chance of returning it.

my 4.0 gal. IMS tank has been GREAT, but I've seen a lot of variation in these posts ... quality control issues, I would guess ... the gap in this pic is the result of the piss-poor fit of the Corbin seat, the stock seat matched up perfectly ..

I bought my 650L with a IMS tank. It fits ok. My tank is much smoother than the one pictured. But the white is starting to darken up a little. It hasn't changed since I bought it. Check out my garage for a pic.
