hour meter for 06 yz450f

So last nite I installed the normal hour meter on the new bike for its maiden voyage today. At the track, I inspected it and noticed no recordings. The 06 has an igntion coil right on the top of the plug. So it appears that the standard hour meter cannot work on this bike.

Does anyone know of an hour meter that does work for this?

I plan on throwing the current meter on my Fiddy, it will work on that.

The '03 to '05 models also had the coil on plug. Unless the designs are totally different, the hour meter will work. All you need to do is rap the wire meter wire a few times around the spark plug cap itself. I had to then wrap some black tape around the wire to keep it from unwrapping. It works great.

You mean wrapping it around the outer cap of the sparkplug housing? I dont want to sound stupid, just making sure that is what you meant. I had already pulled the wire out and unmounted the meter. I will redo, just wanted to clarify that it was the outer cap. Thanks alot for the input.

your dealer can get them for you i use a Dubach racing Dr.D hour meter and as far as temp meters go factory fx make stick on temp stickers that change colour to indicate temp i think pro circuit also have the same kinda thing

Hour meters can be purchased through a lot of places. Try Yamaha or Dr. D.

Heat strips are sold in packs of ten for (I believe) $9 from Pro Circuit.

Thanks for the info on how to wire it correctly and the pix solidified it. I reinstalled today and it works around the base of the spark plug cap.

I see some of you have ziptied it to the throttle cables at the frame. Any other brillant ideas how or where to mount this puppy? I am not drilling holes period!

I do wish you could program it to notify at the 3 hr mark...on the SenDec ?

Got mine from northern tools, its a multi-meter, around $40. but it is a tach/hr meter and a maintenance timer all in one, have under bar pad of my Flexx bars. Just run my ground to bolt on frame, and the other I wrap around the coil wire just behind the cap, about 4 wraps then tie wrap it. Can check my time on bike and tach as needed, and its out of the way. Its a pt14 series meter ?

On my 426 I used the 2 sided tape. It worked fine, but was a pain when I wanted to remove the hour meter. On my 450 I used velcro (with sticky back). It works just as well and it's easy to take the hour meter off now. I should mention I have my hour meter mounted on the rear fender under the seat so I end up removing the hour meter every time I take the rear fender off. It's kind of a pain, but I figure in that location it's relatively safe from damage and moisture. I'd say if you're planning on mounting it in a permanent spot the double sided tape works great. If you think you might want to remove it for any reason I'd go with the velcro.

I mounted mine to the black box (i think it is the ignition box) which is mounted on the front of the frame neck, behind the front # plate. Double stick tape wont work there, to slippery-the rubber wrap on the box. I used to cable ties around the hour meter, thru the black rubber wrap on the box. nice and clean install, ran it along with the throttle lines as well. pop off the frt # plate to see the hours, besides that you shouldnt have to remove any time, I think.
