WR 450 06 exhaust

Recommended Posts

i just purchased my new bike to replace my 02 wr 426 ? . I have a White Bros R4 pipe on my 426 and like the sound but its to damn loud. I want to buy new pipe for new bike but want feedback on who's using what on 06. I ride in trails and don't need to piss anyone off with an obnoxious bike ? . What other mods will make this a better running bike. Yes i know to use the search button to find out this info but i really don't have time to read a 1000 pages. :bonk: Thanks

I'd suggest reading the sticky thread posted on the first page of this forum on this exact topic. Do the Free mods first, then start looking to open your exhaust. The PMB insert is cheap and effective, combined with the free mods and is still quiet.

I have the same bike and just went through all of this over the past month, including a new GTYR Carbon Fiber exhaust. It'll be too loud for your needs, but there is also a silencer insert you can use if you go this route. I'd still to the basics first and see what you need after you've spent some quality time riding the bike so you know where you need help. If you need no help, then all this is irrelevant. If you have any questions, just let me know.

it;ll be loud and annoying. Also, you'd had to drill out the rivets, therefore, you have to decide if you want to do it or not. You can't go back.

Go with the PMB or an aftermarket if you really are focused on the exhaust. Honestly, it's the FREE mods that wil make the biggest improvement for your bike, not the exhaust on it's own. I'm just speaking from my experience in the last several weeks.

What type of riding will you be doing? I may be able to offer some advice on suspension setup as well, since I ride both at Moto-X tracks and the desert. I finally am starting to make some decent progress with the setup for the Moto-X track...Quite a bit of adjustments to get it working properly, but for the desert, almost nothing has to be done in stock form.

How loud is the exhaust without a (stock or PMB) baffle??? I looked at the parts diagram for an 2006 WR and it looks like you can run the sparky without having the baffle in place. Has anyone run the pipe with just the cone tip at the end (no baffle)?

It is louder, but quieter than a YZ450F.

It is a good power gain, fairly close to, but not as much as a YZ450F muffler.

I tried this before going to the procircuit system. No looking back..........

I'm a little confused with the term you are using. ??

- Baffle

- Tail pipe

- Spark arrester

- End cap

- etc.

Do you have pictures?

I took out from the muffler all what I could, without drilling:

- Took out the small allen bolts wich fasten the end cover of the muffler.

- Then, inside the muffler unlbolted 4 allen bolts and took out a plate with a little pipe in it.

- Then put back the cover at the end of the muffler (little allen bolts)

I have riden that way for several month. :bonk:

Is it ok that way ? No sound restrictions here.

Thanks :bonk:

Marco

I'm curious what kind of adjustments you made to the suspension to get a good ride at the track. I don't do a lot of MX, mostly desert, but I go through a lot of big whoops, and like jumpin' a bit too.

I freed up the stock 05 muffler in stages. Each time you free it up more you get more power everywhere assuming it is jetted right. I have now removed all the guts of the muffler except the perforated plate and packing (inside, apart from the bolt on end plate there are another 2 baffles with small pipes through which the exhaust passes). The bike is very loud now but I don't find it unbearable at all. In fact it sounds pretty horny but I'd say it is only OK for bush tracks and not built up areas. Doing this really livened up the top end, I used to think my bike was dull up top and when I looked inside the muffler I understood why. It's too restrictive, and no bolt on baffle will ever make it unrestrictive. Sure, the pea-shooter tail pipe at the back produces so much back pressure you have trouble holding it in place without the bolts tightened up while the engine is running (try it and you will see) so I made a new one up that is slightly bigger than the hole in the end cap and it seats up against the inside of the lip. This made quite a difference and the bike was still very quiet. The I drilled the 4 rivets out and pulled the end off the muffler (need a slide hammer and carefull not to bend it) and removed the second baffle inside which has 2 very small tubes through it. This made it louder but still not nearly as loud as my mates with aftermarket pipes. I went one step further and cut out the first baffle which has one tube through it slightly offset from where the header pipe enters the muffler. This made it very loud, probably about the same as an aftermarket MX pipe. I am planning to modify it further to include a perforated 45mm pipe from the muffler entry to the tail pipe and pack the muffler with packing, I expect to get even more power through the range, especially mid to bottom end. I cut/hacked the baffles out with drills and cold chisels and re-riveted the end back on. I use 170MJ, 48 PJ, airbox snorkel and cut outs removed and ride 0 to 3000ft. The bikes got balls everywhere now.

Dodjy,

Nice explanation. ?

Went to the Parts Catalogue '05 WR450F to see exactly what parts I took out.

Well the result is that I am riding without:

- Spark Arrester

- Tail Pipe

I left in just the "End Cap".

MJ 175, PJ 48, needle stock, snorkel out and side cuts.

My bike runs OK, but I feel it still restricted and not so loud (had a '99 YZ400F before).

Is good to know you went farther un-restricting the stock muffler.

Here in Chile, an aftermarket muffler cost US$600 (FMF).

Thanks a lot. ?:bonk:
