Newbie stupid error!  I need some help in getting this back up and running so I can enjoy the toy.  I bought a 2000 KX 250 all stock no top or bottom end rebuilds very little ride time.  The bike was stored for a short period of time and the orginal owner I believe drained fluids.

I went out for the first ride today and rode 20-30 minutes before the bike stopped running.  When it stopped it sounded like a flapping sound on the right side of the motor.  Each time I try to kick the bike over it sounds like a flap on the right side of the motor and/or ping sound.  I believe that maybe there was no cooling fluid in the bike now looking back on it.  The bike was probably quite hot and I didn't realize it while riding.

What have I done?  Top end, low end rebuild, maybe something to do with a water pump, etc?  I didn't think and rode before checking fluids and now will pay the price.  Any and all help is much appreciated.

The flapping you heard may be the water pump.  Did the engine seize up?  If not you may be lucky.  Maybe it had just enough coolant to keep it going.

Check for transmission oil in the gearbox, too.

Thanks Karl!  I'm checking my fluids today.  I couldn't see any fluid in the radiator when I pulled the cap.  The motor still turns just has that flapping sound/ping sound.  Thanks again.

Undo the drain bolt on the water pump cover? and see how much fluid comes out. Just because you cant see fluid looking into the radiator doesnt mean that there is no fluid in the system.

I'll drain gas and radiator fluids tonight and start working on taking the tank off the bike and getting into the top end.

Before I rip into the top end, I would drain the fluids and if okay refill them. Then remove the gas tank and check the compression and what does the spark plug look like? Post you'r results and we'll go from there.
