2000 Yz426

Recommended Posts

Just need to upgrade the clutch with some '01 parts, and possibly an '03 exhaust cam. Other than that just keep the oil fresh, air filter clean, and ride it like you stole it.

And at $1700, if it's in good condition, you ARE stealing it :applause:

The 2000 426 is a great bike. I've had mine for 5 years now and no problems at all. Some have had problems with the woodruff key coming loose. The one thing i had to do to my bike was to do the 01 clutch mod and the BK mod both easy to do and don't cost that much. When you ride it if you hear the clutch chattering do the 01 clutch mod and it will fix that. I would also suggest doing the 450 exhaust cam mod then you can get rid of the drill and just kick it over like the 450. I haven't had to adjust my valves until this year on my bike. The only thing i hate about it is the weight they are pigs. And if you do get it i would try to get the susspension sent off to have someone set it up for your weight and riding style. I would check everything over real good on the bike. Ask questions about regular services (oil changes, air filter cleanings) and pull the plug and see how well it is jetted. Good luck hope this helps

The 426 is a great machine, had mine for round 4 months and love it. Get the suspension set up for your weight and style, get an OBEJP or OBEKQ needle into the carb, and finally do the 01 clutch mod. These bikes are very fast and ride very well with a good set up and will last a long time when being well maintained. Get it and dont look back :applause:

Thanks for your comments. I have heard the 426 had clutch problems but I'm no stranger to wrenching on bikes. My wife just gets a little annoyed about how much I spend on them. Just recently sold my CR 250 and want to get another bike, came across the 426 and was interested in any problems they might have had. I'll be looking at it tomorrow, who knows, may have a new bike for my garage.

My oldest boy rides the XR-400, I agree it is a heavy pig, lots of power but heavy. I was concerned about the weight of the 426, but what I can find for OEM specs it says it weighs 233 pound.

Like everyone else I think this is a good price, and a good bike. Some minor issues (like the clutch), but really a solid bike. I did the cam mod, and think that would be another good fix. Lot's of power, handles well, and for 1700 bucks, the price sounds right. I bought mine for a bit more, and had several issues with it before getting it riding nice, but now I love it. I wish I knew about this site before I bought....I could have talked the guy down a bit...

Don't buy it! They're junk! Please forward sellers info to me so I can further investigate. (I'll take $1700 with me just in case.)

To be serious I have a 2000 and love it. I weigh 200 (210 during the holidays) and it's got plenty of power to do roll on third gear wheelies. I've done the bk mod, foot peg mod, and put 1" forward and 1" up bar risers on it with pro tapers and its a lot more comfortable now. (6'0'' tall). The best mod I have done yet was the 450 cam mod. It makes starting the bike a lot easier for friends. They're easy enough once you know the drill but try to teach a buddy the drill just before he rides it 500 ft and stalls it... walking to help restart it sux! Killer price in my opinion as long as it isn't beat to death!

You switch the right footpeg to left side and left footpeg to right side and it lowers them approx.1". There is a post of the exact way of doing this (some minor grinding involved) but it is a very easy mod. I never realized how uncomfortable the bike was to me until I made these simple mods to the pegs and bars!

You think the XR has power...... wait til you get on the 426!!

I've had my 426 for just over a year. I had some gear box problems (worn dogs on 4th and some damaged teeth). I could hear the broken teeth clicking when spinning the back wheel in neutral. If you get to ride the bike, check for surging when under full power. This could indicate worn dogs.

Now that i have it sorted out it is a great bike. Loves ripping up the sand dunes. It has heaps of power.

I'm not very heavy (about 130lb) and I dont have that much trouble with the weight. I do think i might be above average strength for my weight/height. Yes the bike is heavier than a 2 smoke or a newer thumper but dont let it deter you from buying it.
