Ok, I've been thinking alot about gettin a new bike lately, I've been thinking about selling my 2005 Raptor 350 for an '06 YZ250F, but, I've found a brand new in the show room 2003 YZF450 for $5500 Canadian. Just wondering if I'd be better off with the '03 YZF450 for that price or save some more and get a '06 250F? or '06 450F?

Keep in mind I'm coming off a 350 Raptor (similar to Warrior) and plan on riding woods, singletrack, fireroads, etc., no MX.

You are not going to want to get a 450. It will most likely be too much for you. That 250F will have more horsepower, and weighs at least 150lbs less than your quad. And, the 250F's suspension will work better than the 450. The 450 will just plain old be too much bike for you. Having a bike where you have to actively think, to keep both wheels on the ground will not be good for someone who is just starting out. The '03s have a particularly hard hitting motor.

I'm not a total greenhorn here, I've ridden many bikes before, just that this would be the newest and most powerful. I started out by riding around on a XL 185, then progressed to the likes of my uncles XR400, I'm confident that I can handle the power, and I'm sure I want the big bore bike because I'm 235lbs without riding gear and feel the need for a bigger bike (I am a bigger boy), My uncles XR400 was quite nice, just a little heavy, so I'm sure I can get used to the YZ450F, my concern is in the 4 speed tranny. This bike is going to be used for woods, trail, fireroad, singletrack riding with the ocasional trip to the MX track for fun, I'm just wondering if the MX designed 4 speed will hold me back in these styles of riding. I also really can't afford a new 250F

i have an 03,i ride all woods and even some gncc's.stock gearing is way too tall for me in the woods.i actually did not like the bike the first few times i went riding. i kept stalling i geared it down and ton.but as i have gotten faster and used to the bike i have it geared a little taller.you lose some top speed but plenty fast for woods riding.a flywheel weight helps a lot also.once you learn to ride it you will love it.besides you are to big for a 250f you would punish that thing.

Since you won't be doing any MX just off road riding. I suggest you look for a WR 450 rather then a YZ.

The above sums it up. Go with the YZ450F. There isn't an all around better bike. Given your size, I don't think a 250 will cut it.

I think I'm gonna do it, I went to the shop but now they say they wont take my Raptor for a trade in, so hopefully I can sell it ASAP and get the 450F, unless I strike a deal on a used one in good shape.........anyone wanna trade? lol j/k
