tm designworks installation

The older TM sliders were just solid nylon, and did require the swingarm be removed be cause they had a strut running from the top to the bottom run. many of their latest designs have eliminated that strut and added a padded backing to make them quieter. They still make more noise than the stock unit, but they are extremely durable, and they bolt down so that they don't scrub around like the OEM unit does. That in turn solves the swing arm abrasion issue common to all YZ's since at least '96.

My 250F came to me with a TM slider already, but when I had to address this on my 450, I did This Instead.

I have a friend that has that set up on his CRF250X and it makes the loudest chain slap noise. You can hear his chain over his exhaust. I would not buy one, but it is a free country.

This is a common take on this product and I've never understood it. Some folks also don't like skid plates because they reflect engine rattles.

That is fine, but I'm not sure why I'm supposed to care about the sound produced by any new part, if it works it works.

The TM chain slider definitely works. I also recommend the chain guide, I bent the stock Al one in a race once and it took me 30 minutes to get going again.

I'm not sure why you posted anything. The TM is loud....that is a fact. I would not have one because it sounds like crap. And you change the subject to skid plates?

Good point. My 450 swingarm had very visible wear already when I sold it.

Do yourself a favor and check your swingarm before it cracks.

No, same subject, which is somebody not wanting to use a product for reasons other than its intended function, i.e., what it sounds like. The skidplate comparison is applicable because a lot of folks complain about it making their bike "sound like crap," and I just think it is an irrational reason to not use an otherwise well-designed and beneficial component.

Hey Hick, What is irrational, is you stating that its okay for a product to have (annoying) side effects as long as it works for its intended purpose. The TM thing might last forever, but I find the extra noise annoying and I won't have it on my bike. Enough said, let the thread die bro.

Hick's statement made sense to me. Particularly when dealing with dirt bikes and racing machinery. Some things are tolerated if the component satisfies the functionality requirements. That you are not willing to tolerate that much noise for the sake of that particular benefit also makes sense, but it's your viewpoint, not his, and I don't see where he demanded your agreement. Owing to that, what I have trouble seeing the sense in is your getting quite as heavily twisted over this rather small point. But I guess that's your prerogative as well.

There isn't any one "thing," anywhere, that you can find that "works for its intended purpose" that doesn't have at least one person like you that is "annoyed" by a "side effect."

And if not wanting to benefit from any "intended purpose" due to some annoyance is not the definition of an irrational decision then.......

..well I give up.

Didn't mean to "punk you," I was just trying to make a point. My friend that has the TM is very disappointed in the noise his makes. I only posted the first time about it because I wanted to share my experience of the product. Thats what this forum is about, sharing experiences so when somebody needs information about a certain product they can reference information, bad and good, about a product. I thought you kind of bashed me on your first post because I was negative about the slider, so I acted a little childish......my apologies to you and everybody else. I see your point and I hope you see mine.

Mine is the original OEM slider put there by Yamaha in '03 :applause:

How long has that been on? My last oem slider lasted only 6 months, but the one prior to that lasted ard a year. :ride: Probably tough luck but if i can get polisport cheap, no harm giving it a try. Otherwise oem is fine. $159 is kinda ??

The slider alone costs $ 80, the kit price is $ 160 (slider + roller + rear guide).

They claim the new material is quiet too.

I have tried Polisport and Ufo sliders, they won't even last a summer. OEM slider (approx. $ 30) lasts much longer if you don't want the tmdesignwork nice looking blue stuff.

How much is OEM? I'm gonna need to replace all of em soon.

The Honda guys bitch each other out about thier crappy valve problem, we gripe at each other about chain sliders. :applause: How cool is that? :ride:
