450 Cylinder/Piston on a 426?

Recommended Posts

Hi peeps,

This might be a silly question but is it possible for an 03 450 Cylinder to fit on a 02 426 crank and bottom end, using the 426 head? the reason i'm asking is, i've been thinking about going up in CC's and rather than have to overbore and fit an oversize piston, i spotted a new 450 cylinder for a nice price and was wondering if there is any difference aesthetically between the external dimensions between these two cylinders, as it would be a much easier way of udgrading engine size without the need to re-nickalise the bore etc?

has anyone tried this? :applause:

Thanks

ok, so that's a definite no-no then... looks like i'll have to have my cylinder overbored and re-nickalised if i want to get it as close to a 450cc? How would one know if the cylinder needs to be re-nickalised before fitting an oversize piston, mine seems to be in good condition as i can still see the honing marks on the bore. and ring gaps seemed to be within specs during my last rebuild some weeks ago?

I'm beginning to question is the cost worth it for an extra 18cc, maybe i should keep her at 426cc and just go for a new oem piston/rings combo? :ride:

thanks anyhoo guys :applause:

yes just keep it a 426 , the nikisal cylinders are almost imposable to hurt,

and the 450 crank takes way to much effort to correctly set up for the normal guy,

i do alot of motor work , and on that bike you would be way ahead keeping it the stock configuration ,

and then sell it at some point and get a new ride :ride:

you will be happy you did ?

yeh, i think i will keep her std and just fit a new piston kit. now does anyone know where's the best place to get an oem kit? hope you don't say "a dealer" coz my nearest dealer will charge me an arm and a leg for one! ?

Any of you guys know a reasonably priced U.S stockist :ride:

thanks again for the advice, i guess you've drawn a conclusion to my dilemna :applause:
