2006 Yamaha WR 450f Performance Mods?

Recommended Posts

You are right, this is a GREAT site - period

I got my 2006 Wr450F two weeks ago....

Some questions I have not yet cut the grey wire or fiited my JD jet kit or the Zip Ty fuel screw, what will these mods do for the WR, make it smoother? even more acceleration. Has anyone made the grey wire switchable to be used in different riding conditions?

Finally thanks to all of the excellent information in this forum ?

The JD will allow a simple redial of your jetting.

The Fuel screw - which ever brand will allow better fine tuning of idle and just off for better low down throttle response.

The Grey wire earths the CDI map for the YZ. Only detected on start (power up) so non switchable on the move. You can reset to WR, but have to stop-start the motor again...

Enjoy

Hi all,

I am living in the Netherlands and bought last jear a new WR450 2005 model.

Changed some things, like needle, jet 48, removed the snorcle, some part of the cilencer, trottle crew.

I read about the grey wire, but are there some differences with bikes from europe

and the US, if so how do I know that my bike is an Europe one or US one ??

I guess they will not sell an US bike to Europe!! Does the grey wire issue is the same for Europe bikes ?

In the beginning the bike was fast and strong enough, but riding it for more then a

year I think there must be some more power in it. My friend all ride YZ450 with license

plate, they rebuild it here so they can ride on the street. We ride as much as possible on sand ofcourse.

Maybe somebody know some more about this

Gilbert

I'm giving up my YZ250F for the WR450F Thursday. My eyes are bloodshot reading about the free mods. Does the cam timing still apply for the '06? On the same note, some one have a good suspension setting to start with a 190 lb. rider? I'm breaking it in this weekend so no harsh riding yet. Thanks.

The 05 might not...

the euro bikes do not have the grey wire

BUT the 06 does have it ? I have a EURO 06 model...

Check the manual for your 05 bike and look at the electrical schematic (or under the tank) for the "grey" wire. It shows as an extra earth in the diag (to earth the YZ ignition map).

There are subtle differences in the WR model world wide, but for 06 the motor is essentially the same on all 450s.

"Anyone have a pic of where the Fuel screw is to be located. I did all the other mods to my new wr450 and all I have left is the Zyp Ty."

I just did this yesterday, I have no pic, but you need to flip the carb upside down to see it. remove the 4 screws that hold the float cover on, you need to punch out the little ring and unscrew the old, you might need a pick to get the washer and o-ring out, they spring will come out no problem. Screw it in all the way then back it out 1.5 turns.

You can't miss it, it's the only thing you could stick a very small screwdrvier into and tuen a screw.

Thie below pic is from ARin's Jetting Thread (great reading)

I just bought an 06 WR450f. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. This thing was a turd! It took me 20 minutes to find that darn throttle stop and cut the smoothe portion off with side-cuts. That made it seem somewhat normal, but still too slow. Why does the header start to glow orange at idle? Excessive lean condition is my guess. I would have to think it is abnormal. I'm so glad I read found this forum, now I have hope that I did'nt waste $7600.00 tax inc. I'm gona mod the crap out of it. I love the way the bike looks and handles, but I gotta have more POWER! Why would people want to order a YZ throttle stop screw, when they could just cut it like I did? The air injection mod/timing wire mod/exhaust mod PMB/air-box mod and re-jetting are done as soon as I get my hands on some parts. Thanks to all of you for enlightening me. My bike also sputters under load at the big end. I don't think I'm even close to 11k RPM.

Guys and Gals,

I have just done two things since bringing home my WR450. Cut the throttle stop, and 15 minutes ago I removed the spark arrester and the tightly held baffle. Wow! Taking the baffle and spark arrester made it like a new machine. I mean almost scary is the difference. I was on one wheel as much as two. I can't believe the exhaust is so restricted from the factory. I can't wait to do the other mods. I don't think the bike is much louder either. Then again, it is hard to tell riding. The baffle is a tough to dig out after drilling and punching out two small rivets, but it will come out. I kinda mangled it on the way out, but it ain't ever going back in.

hey anyone out there feel that the 06 has lost its legs?? i have a 03 with a blown tranny that i am rebuilding for resale and i would love to put that engine in the o6 chassis. the 03 had way way more top end rev ,and apparently i like that cuz it was the first thing i noticed when i got my new bike into the top gears. it has a monster mid range hit and then just signs off. i have the power now, fmf q2 exhaust ,and all the mods are done. (its a canadian model so we dont have all that emmissions stuff you guys in the states do)what else, i didnt put a jd jet kit in this one cuz it seems to run much better than my 03 did stock. the 03 took me a few months of jetting, air box drilling and general f-ing around to get it to run properley (with occasional blown starter gears and starter clutches in between) but once it was set up i loved that bike. so anyways any suggestions on how to get some over rev out of this thing. and yes i have geared it up a tad, but that is more of a band aid fix cuz i do mostly goat trail type riding in the canadian rockies as well as occasional high speed stuff (just got back from the baja where we did 7 days of mostly 5th gear stuff). i am more interested in changing the way the engine delivers power. any such thing as a rev pipe that is still fairly quiet???

anyways any advice would be appreciated. i have tons of experiance with the 03 model if anyone needs some help.

greetings, i am interested in what kind of tall seat you have, i am 6'3" and noticed a big difference from my 03 to the 06 in sitting standing transition. obviously due to the lowering of the frame and seat height in 04 and 05. never thought 20 mm would be a big deal but it is. how about rasinig the bars a bit with the seat?? any ideas. i just put on a gpr stabilizer so it might be tricky for me to raise my bar height now. any suggestions would be appreciated.

SDG make tall seats, taller bars are a must. Have you got stock 7/8" bars or fatbars?

Throw away the Q2 and get an mx pipe if you want power. It is holding you back.

You can get 98db systems, but even they are too loud for some people, but way quieter than say my procircuit (103+db!). These are way less restricted than your Q2.
