getting the oil filter out

is there any trick to getting out the oil filter out of an 03 yz450? for the life of me i cant get it out. i looked in the manual and it shows it to be at the bottom of the oil tank in the frame. is this correct? is it regular counter-clockwise to loosen it? im pretty sure that it needs to be changed and any help would be much appreciated.

what your talking about is the oil strainer , if its never been out it prob needs to be cleaned . im not sure what size it is but definitly use a six point socket and a 1/2 pullhandle , they put em in pretty damn tight . your oil filter is on the right side engine case in front of the clutch cover , it has 2 bolts that have 8 mm heads and 1 that is a 5 mm allen wrench . hope this helps

The oil filter is behind the cover right over your big toe on your right foot.

It's behind this cover.

To get the strainer out, try to remove the hose first, and then get a 6 point socket on the strainer. Most people will say don't mess with it, but once you get it out, it will go in and out without a problem, as long as you don't muscle it back in. I think it's a good idea to give it a look see at least once a season.

ah...for some reason it seems like the shop manual says to take only 1 of the bolts that cover the oil filter off. i thought it was some extra reseviour or somethin. ill change it next ride :applause:

You need to read the manual closely. You can remove only the bottom of the three bolts that hold the oil filter cover on but that will just allow you to drain the excess oil from the oil filter area. You then still need to remove the other two bolts to get the cover off to change/clean the oil filter.

I, personally, think it's important to remove the screen at the bottom of the frame resevior to check it for particles etc. You need to loosen the hose clamp that holds the hose to the nipple in order to get the screen out easily. If it hasn't been removed before, the hose does not come off very easily.

I use a spray can of brake cleaner to spray the screen clean and check for particles. In addition to just removing the hose from the screen nipple, I remove the single bolt on the bottom right engine case that holds that whole hose assembly in place and drain that line since there is a fair amount of dirty oil in the line. Maybe overkill, but it's really pretty easy while everything else is draining.

When you reinstall the new filter, coat the ring with some oil so it sticks better.
