Quick fix for burning oil?

Just wondering if anyone has tried to use any type of marvel mystery oil, or any kind of additive to help burning oil in the XR600.

This is the situation. I have an '89 XR which absolutely needs a new top end and seals. It burns so much oil that after 10 miles of riding, the rear fender is dripping with oil. It leaves a trail of blue smoke down the street at any and all speeds.

I just finished putting the bike together, and I knew it burned oil when I bought it and was planning on rebuilding the motor, but I thought I could get at least one ride out of it. But I didn't realize it was this bad.

Anyway, I am leaving for a desert trip next weekend, and there is no way with the holidays that I can order the parts I need and get them in time. So would anyone even consider putting any type of additive in their motor for one weekend, knowing that the motor will be completely taken apart and rebuilt after this one weekend?

I just don't know if adding an additive would cause more damage to the motor or clutch. If adding an additive is highly not recommended as a very temporary fix, then I would probably just keep a quart or 2 of oil with me and check the oil level every 50 miles or so. It actually dropped a tiny bit on the dip stick after 20 miles. (haha).

Thanks for any input. All I really need to know is if anyone has tried an additive and if there are any problems associated with doing this as a temprorary fix.

I bet your buddies will make you ride in the back of the pack. If the engine is not making any expensive mechanical noises and just smoking, I'd take enough extra oil to get by. Additives like STP :applause: will not do anything good for the engine. Take an extra spark plug(S). Good luck.

I'm actually going to watch a M.O.R.E. race in Barstow. So I'll be taking pictures and video taping along the track and not smoking anyone out to badly.

No, their are no engine knocks. The motor actually runs and sounds pretty solid.

Thanks for the additive advice. I'll just spend that money on some more oil, and a few extra rags!

The bike had a K&N Air filter on it, and when I took it off to replace it with a foam filter, there was a lot of dust and small dirt particles in the boot. So I think the motor was not taken care of very well before I acquired it. Anyway, I bought this bike to have fun rebuilding it from the ground up. I just wanted to leave the motor for last and put a few miles on it to make sure there was nothing else wrong with the motor or tranny before I pulled it all apart.

my buddy rides an xr600 that smokes that bad and he does ride at the back of the pack for obvious reasons. since he bought it we have been on several long rides and it is running great aside from using about a 1/4 liter of oil per tank of gas, it hasn't even fouled a plug yet. a rebuild is in the near future but the engine sounds quieter then my xr650r's

One to many falls without a helmet, makes him a person with a cracked head not necessarily a crackhead, ya I know, end results are the same, 900+ incoherent post. But we all know he is right this time, leaded fuel will deposit lead(one of the hardest metals know to man) to deposit on the rings and valve guides and rebuild the engine while you ride.

Then why not add a lead substitute to your fuel. $9.99 for a 32oz bottle at your local autoparts store. The CD-2 brand even says in big bold letters right on the front of the bottle "For Off Road Use Only". Perfect for an XR!!! Or is the lead substitute nothing like leaded gas.

I can't remember when they got rid of leaded gas. I used to use it in my '69 Mustang back in '87. Is my '89 XR600 motor designed for unleaded fuel only? Ya, I am sure it is. I remember most cars int he 80's were unleaded fuel only.

Anyway. I'll just rebuild it in another week and all will be good again.

DSTerry, you mention that a K&N filter was on the bike. I have not had good service from K&N. In very dusty conditions, they allowed crud to seep past no matter how carefully I prepared and installed them. I have very good luck with UNI and Twin Air. Even when they are practically stopped up, they still do not let anything past.

Not to mention the cheesy seal gasket on the filter that fits poorly in the airbox. I suspect at least on the 650L's that is also a weak link in the design. I ran one on my 650 for years, but Georgia is a much wetter state than others (especially the southwest), and I suspect that is why it did not cause problems for me ...yet. :applause:

I agree on the K&N filter. I ditched the K&N immediately. I purchased a twin air. I used twin air or uni filters for the 10 years of motocross I raced, and I never had a problem with dirt or dust getting thru the filters.

I am also a strong believer in using the airbox covers (the hard plastic ones) whenever I wash my bikes. I remove the seat (or side cover on the XR) remove the air filter and install the cover. Then I spray the entire airbox and bike with simple green, then hose (or pressure wash) the entire thing including the airbox. Other people may do it differently, but it worked great for me. 10 years of racing and I never had a siezed motor.

I think K&N is fine for the street, but for the dirt I will only use the foam filters. And I am sure that has a lot do to with why the motor on my XR is worn out.

I know im right, thats why i said it. Is there any way to add lead to gas?
