breaking in new 05 yz450?

Recommended Posts

I broke in my 05 YZ450 a couple of months ago..

rode gentle for an hour..

Changed oil and filter.

A few bits of metal on the filter..

Rode a little harder for acouple of hours and did the change again..

Filter clean second time.

Changing oil and filter every 4-5 hours now. Using Mobile no.1 4T motorcycle racing oil..

Not sure if this is perfect and if i am erring I hope it is on the side of caution..

I figure oil is cheap. Gone through 3 oem paepr filters in about 15 hours of riding and now I have a stainless steel filter so I can clean it every time I oil change without a big cost..

I clean the air filter evry couple of hours.

But I am probably even greener than you are.. :banghead:

Warm it up well. Shut it down, check the oil level, and look for any problems. Ride it no harder than 50-60% for the first 10 minutes or so, but don't baby it. Run it at up to 75-80% for the next hour, and then almost as you normally would after that, avoiding only lugging it or over revving. Also, acceleration/deceleration is better for it than extended periods at speed. After 3 hours change the oil, clean or replace the filter, and you're done.

The key is to avoid being too easy on it without thrashing it either.

i agree gray, babying any new engine in and around the same rpm's for break in can be worse than just hammmering it. :banghead:

Break-in poses a problem based on a conflict of needs. The rings need to be put under a good deal of pressure to develop a good seal against the cylinder, while the piston, bearings and cams, etc., would really be just as happy to spin in a supply of warm oil for 12 hours with no load at all.

It's a kind of balancing at, in a way. Push the rings hard enough without hurting anything else. Just remember, it's a high performance engine, built for this kind of stuff...it can take it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I let mine warm up and then let her rip.. You only have a 30 day warranty better make sure if something is going to go wrong it goes wrong right away. I've put about 5 to 6 hours on my new bike. What service do I need to have done to my thumper besides the oil change.. The dealer where I bought the bike wants to charge $120 just for the after-break in checkups.
