no jump, head-on collision with a car in Baja...both forks were sheared off the bike...serious injuries to me, no fun.

Glad to not see a chalk outline next to the bike. Hope you're healing up and back riding soon.

I personally wrench on my bike every chance I get, because in my opinion its part of "the whole experience" (yeah... I know I'm getting into the "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintanence" realm here). But it really does bring a sence of... wholeness... to the riding experience. Because not only do you know exactly what has been put into your bike, you know exaclty how it went in and how it affects the way your bike behaves.

the way I see it there are bassicly three kinds of riders:

the ignorant who think changing nothing is best

the people who have been there, done that, and don't need to change anything anymore (this could mean they bought a stock bike and are happy with it)

and those who are still tinkering looking for just a few more ounces of weight savings, or a few more horsepower, or just a tad more torque.

edit:

and it doesn't matter how good the bike looks, it only matters how it runs :banghead:

another Two Kinds of Riders:

Those that buy a bike to impress themselves,

and

Those that buy a bike to impress others ...

:busted:

I like that but, only one of the two can do both :banghead: if he is good? What if by impressing himself he impress others? Or if he is real good and makes money at it (impressing others) that might impress himself....or wait there is also the time you are just impressed that you lived through something impressive? or then there is the not planned that impress' everyone else and your glad you lived through it :busted:

Maybe it's some just get a bike to impress others and some buy a bike for the adventure :banghead:

How about those like you that just want to find out what works better? The fun of making a bike that fits them. I like changing my bike till I like it more. Somethings stay, somethings get filed into the round can. There are things I can't live without now that I have tried them. I road fine without some thing but, once I tried it, riding was just that much better. Steering dampener! Bigger fuel tank! Better Bars (and in the right place)! Then the stuff that just made the power more fun. Pumper carburetor! Header/Muffler! Gearing! Tires! The things that make riding more safe, Case guard, shark fin, hand guards, better bars, gripper seat, steering dampener. Some of this stuff makes it way better getting back home if something goes wrong way out in the middle of nowhere. Radiator guards, Case guard, shark fin, hand guards, better bars. Stuff needed just to be able to race? You need your spokes ty rapped for some races, also things that make life easier, oil sight tube, Dri break, bigger lights (Baja 1000 and other night racing like Dakar)...............I think I ran this into the ground but, the guy's that take it serious know that there are tons of weekend warriors out to just have a good time.

that falls into my third category IMO. Because its still tinkering finding what works best (which is what I meant).

Thats the way I have been approaching my BRP, find what works best for me and run with it.

My friends that think their stock bike is the best it will ever be laughed at me when I went through five sets of handelbars in three months trying to find the best one for me, and then I found it, and the ride is that much more comfortable because of it. The same guys laughed at me again when I was going through rear tires every third ride trying to find the best for where I ride, yet one of them just barely changed his tire after owning the bike for 3 years :banghead: Same guys still laugh about me riding with a Scotts damper, but they are the ones that swap out and wreck after hitting a rut now.

anyway, we are talking about the same thing, just different wording. :banghead:

If i'm not riding my bike i'm fixin my bike, if i'm not fixin my bike i'm trying to make it better! I don't mind if guy's leave there bike stock just don't tell me that its perfect the way it is when you have never tried change.

While I enjoy doing all my own maintenance, the reliable nature of the bikes we all ride (XR) usually allows our 'wrenching' focus to be on improving the bike; making it more fun and better performing.

I've had 'high-performance' bikes that had high maintenance requirements. That's not for me. I want to ride!

I just returned from a big dual-sport ride in Arkansas. It was a fun sight (for me, anyway) as I towed my friend on his KTM with my XR650L to start his bike, in a parking lot full of several dozen KTM's. Go XR! :banghead:

There are 2 types of bike owners...........

And then there are riders who wish they were XR600/650 riders..... :D:D

Thats my philosophy. I wash it and keep it clean b/c wrenching on a dirty bike is just retarded.

Dont really care that every piece of plastic on the bike has a little road rash here and there.

Each one of those scratches is a lesson learned.

Have no problem spending money on the bike...just not on cosmetics.

I'll save my cosmetics money and waxing/polishing for my cute little 500hp sports car.

Um, I count 4 in your post. JK:confused: :ride:

I put myself in another catagory - too busy with work to ride or wrench:cry: but its OK 'cause summer break is coming up soon!

If you never crash you ride too slow. You have to push the limits to be a success.

Now I wish I could get my wife to understand that when my butt comes hobbling in the door from crashing on a good ride and I try to tell her that if your not Give'nr your best and trying new lines with more speed that riding well become dull and then I would just have to take up something like Glider planes! Oh wait I have taking up Glider planes!! Well maybe golf then!

Are they beneath your notice too when they go flying past you on the trails because the XRL is such a tank ? ?

Like they can get by- I take up the whole trail!

Its quicker than it has any right to be on a tight trail, but yeah, someone good can manage to get by.
