03 WR450 australian wiring Diag.

I am looking for a australian / NZ wiring diag for my 450. I picked up the bike second hand and noticed that all the electrics have been taped up behind the headlight. I took the tape off and discovered a really bad wiring job. Apparently the indicators were taken off right from new, and there is a polisport headlight on there. I can see that there are the left and rear indicator wires, but when I plug in the actual indicators I get nothing... The Kill switch, headlight, starter (tries to go) all work.

where do you think I should start looking?

BTW I allready have the US version of the manual, but there is no mention of the indicator lights.

I have got the '05 wiring diagram if you like.

Can you do a PDF and post a link to it? I just started looking into doing a home made dual sport kit (searching throught the forums for more info) and I would be interested to see how the Australian WR is wired from the factory for dual sport use.

I have the same question about the Australian 1999 WR400F. I have a US version, a 1999 WR400F. It has a 12VAC electrical system.

The Australian wiring diagram doesn't seem to jive. Maybe you can help me undertand.

The horn and flasher realy need to tun on a DC system (the lights can run off either AC or DC). Did the Australian version of this bike have a 12VDC system and a battery? If it does, the batt. is not shown on the diagram. and if the regulator (pictured) is a 12VDC rectifier/regulator, the stator AND DC regultor could not share a common ground, hence the "floated" ground on Electrex and Trick Dual Sport kits.

Can anyone shed light?

the diagram is correct, the horn on the aussie bikes is 12v AC. the flasher runs off AC fine, mine works!. the 400 NEVER had a battery or DC system, only an AC regulator (12V).

do u have a problem with your electrics?

hm.. that's interesting. I have searched for AC horns and flashers, but could not find anything.

So far for my 99 WR400F, i installed a SPDT switch to do the high low/beam, wired up a mechanical switch for the brake light, put on a mirror, and put on the "Mega Horn" (which is complete crap in my opinion). If i could get an AC horn and flasher unit, i would be quite stoked. Then all i would need is the speedometer (bicycle computer?), and i could pass safety.

Anyone know where i could find such parts?

he prob would have just used parts of it to get an idea on how things worked

i bought the 3 pin flasher unit from yamaha, it was a genuine yamaha part when i got it.

the horn im not too sure, i think it may have come from the ADR (australian design rules) place when they are imported.

not sure on where to get the horn

what you could do, is put a rectifier in and float the ground to a DC horn and flasher, and keep the lights and everything on AC. there have been a few threads abouthtis before.

Here is the 03/04 diagram, almost the same as the other one but it shows the rectifier in the horn circuit.

It is nothing special and they always stop working pretty quickly, I dug this out of my box of ADR related crap.

With the battery the whole bike still runs on AC, the charging system is the only thing that gets DC. You would probably be better off making something out of one of those personal alarms women carry around, they are really loud and run off batterys.

Looking at the pictures of the "AC" horn from 4Strokes Only, and the ADR one, I think this is exactly what they do. They use 2 diodes and a capacitor to rectify the 12VAC. This would produce 17VDC, because a 12V rms AC sinusoid is a 34V peak to peak waveform ( (12/.707)*2 = 34Vpp sine wave. Rectified and filtered would be half that, or 17VDC).

You can see the outline of a capacitor in the black shrink tubing they use ($50 for a $7 12V horn and some passive components! rip.). My only concern with doing this was that the circuit would load down the 12VAC regulator, but i guess it is fairly high wattage, and would not be damaged. The horn draws up to 1A of current, so the worst case condition the capacitor would discharge fully and you would bear the warbling of the unfiltered recified AC voltage cycling from 0V to 17VDC.

It's all clear now.

Hi Brett, just came across this post and i have a 99 WR400F myself and we have been trying to source the AC flasher can but yamaha dont seem to make the correct one anymore and cant seem to find the specs for it anywhere to be able to find an aftermarket version that will work. Do you or anyone else on here have any sugestions
