DMV called me about my WR450 Street Legal

Recommended Posts

I recently went down to the DMV and got a California Plate for my 2005 WR450. A couple of days later they called and said that they needed to have me bring it in for inspection. I am a little worried that they are going to take my plat away. Any suggestions?

Since the '05 is green-stickered, getting a plate is legal. They'll likely be checking to make sure you haven't modified the engine or exhaust and to check for turn signals, reflectors, DOT tires and other required street-legal gear. If you don't have those items, prepare to surrender your plate. I wouldn't ride the bike there, you may not be able to ride it home. I'm curious though, how did you get a plate BEFORE having the bike inspected? DMV doesn't usually do things that way.

Or....they may be looking for the emissions sticker :banghead:

They might just need a VIN inspection. Call and ask. If so, tell them you would like to take it to a CHP office for that inspection. Leave the words dual sport, emmisions, and "offroad" out of the conversation if you can.

Be sure to let us all know how it comes out with DMV and also the details as to how you got the plate in the first place. I know back in 98' when I bought my WR 400 new from the local Yamaha dealer, I paid for the Green Sticker registration and in the mail comes a CA street plate. I asked no questions, put a Baja Designs kit on and never looked back! Good Luck

Tell them to send an inspector over to your house and he can inspect it. It is a brand new bike! They will not bother to get anyone over. Check with a Lawyer to see what your rights are in Kaliforniastan! :applause:

When you street-legal a bike that is not sold from the factory in that configuration in CA, an inspection is almost always required. As for getting the inspector to come to your house, fat chance. :banghead:

I agree that you shouldn't bring the bike in.... My DMV also said to bring my bike in, they want to do a vin verification on the bike (they're looking for the emissions sticker). I had a CHP do the verification and I brought the paperwork in, no problem... Don't have the DMV do the VIN verification, they'll shoot you down...

The biggest BS about all of this is that the bike comes with a smog device that makes this bike more compliant than most vehicles we see on the road everyday. I called CARB and explained this to them, they now say that the bike doesn't meet "Safety Standards" even with a dualsport kit... BS....

The DMV and CARB is running out of excuses!!!!!! They're just making shit up as they go...... :banghead:

They do in Michigan. Call 911 tell them I need a motorcycle safety inspection or vin# inspection and they dispatch someone to my house. And all with a smile. Granted Michigan is a long way from Cali :banghead: They do things a little different out there.

I say let them come and take the plate off the bike if they want it that bad. Untill then its yours. :banghead:
