YZ426/450 for sale in NC.. Am I asking too much?

Recommended Posts

This is my 3rd YZ (plus 1 WR) and I absolutely love it and hate to get rid of it, but I just bought a KTM520exc and can't afford to keep both. I've got a TON of extras and over $2500 in engine upgrades plus receipts on my YZ and thought my asking price would be a great deal. I listed it for sale a couple weeks ago for $3300obo and have only had a few calls. The bike wasn't wrecked or had the engine blown or anything like that. The upgrades were done to turn it into a race machine and it has very low hours and runs and looks great. Awesome bike for the next owner. What do you think? :D

Recent $$ upgrades/extras $$: (well over $3000+)

-Thumper Racing 450 kit. Motor redone by Central Cycle in Baltimore (professional race builders)

including porting and polishing head, valves, piston, sleeve, cams, cam chain, etc..

-Magura hydraulic clutch

-Full Race tech suspension front and rear $$

-Steahly flywheel

-Renthal bars

-Thunder Alley full exhaust

-Zip-Ty hot start

-new front and rear sprockets

-new o-ring chain

-New Graphic set

-new front shock seals

-new stainless steel front and rear wheel bearings as well as linkage and rear shock bearings

-recent front and rear brake pads

Most riders are not very good mechanics. Most riders are weary of buying a used 4-stroke, fearing buying someone else's problem. Now, factor in heavily modified race bikes, and the average Joe is terrified. When you say, "I did a top end", they hear "I blew it up", when you say, "I just checked the valves and they were all fine", they hear "the valves need to be replaced", when you say "It has about 50 hours on it" they hear "It might have one last ride in it". We all know that spending a fortune on a bike rarely makes it worth any more. When I sell a bike I put the stock exhaust back on, stock clamps, bars (I've actually seen them say "Wow the bars haven't even been bent), take all numbers off, put the stock seat on and try to return it to as stock looking as possible. It will sell faster, easier and often at more. Save all the goodies for your next bike, or sell it on Ebay.

Thanks for the input. NCMountainman.... send me a pm or email me at tonic750@earthlink.net if you want to consider a trade. Just curious as to why you are selling. Not sure I can afford to keep 2 bikes (KTM and YZ or WR) but maybe we can work something out?

well i ran that scenario past the wife and she reminded me that the agreement was if i got my 05 yz the wr was to SELL!!! sorry :D

Been there done that.......

extras do not add value to MX bikes..... :D

Strip them back to stock or as close as you can and sell the extras on here or Ebay.....or to your buddies...you will recoup more of your out of pocket cost this way.....the parts will sell...just takes time :D

So true.

A used 4 stroke in my eyes is a potential mechanical money pit. I think that's the way all these bikes will eventually play out. Once a used bike blows itself up, its only good for parts. Thus any extras on a used bike mean absolutely nothing.

-new stainless steel front and rear wheel bearings as well as linkage and rear shock bearings

-recent front and rear brake pads

-Properly rejetted carb when pipe was added

-Frame guards

-Aluminum disc guard

-Aluminum chain guide

-Front Tire is new

-Rear Tire has about 90% tread

-Extra front and rear tires with 90% tread

if it makes your feel better, but prob won't, I got my 01 426 for 2500 in 2004 and it was mint. I know nothing was done cause it was all still original and you could see that none of the bolts were touched.

aftermarket goodies pay for themselves when your ridding, not reselling.

Good luck

well if you were selling it to someone who wanted the extra crap and would probly put it on himself anyhow, than its a heck of a deal. most of these upgrades are an improvement over stock, the condition of the bike(whether its been thrashed or not) can be judged when test ridden. just because its been modified is nothing to be afraid of;i'd be more afraid of someone taking the performance parts off and putting all the new looking stock crap back on. people that take the time and money to modify, take much better care of thier bikes as far as i'm concerned :banghead:

I dont think either bike is overpriced.

The problem is the financing. Yamaha is offering deals. Most folks look at the monthly payment.

This is what I think also. It's too easy to get a new bike (if you've got good credit) with nothing down and deferred payments. Just sign some papers and take it home with low payments. I know, i've done it many times.
