Cracked Tank on XR650R

Hi, my XR650R's gas tank has developped a crack at the cap. Thankfully about a week before my warranty ran out, so I'm getting a new one from Honda.

Just wondering if that seems to be a common problem, I can't figure out what might have caused that.

Mine did the same thing, as well as a couple others that I've spoken with. I also have small cracks along the side of the tank that are not from impacts, but I believe from UV or heat. None of the leak, just hairline cracks in the outer plastic.

Let me know if you are going to ditch that tank. I will pay to have it shipped to me.

You guys will like this one, in 2002 several of my friends got new CRF450s and we all went to Glamis. I had a 2000 650R. After doing some dune riding we all went to Oldsmobile Hill to watch the action and drag race up the hill. I know that the 650 is no drag bike but I lined up with my buds and other takers. This was my first race against a 450 so I knew I had to get a good start to even stand a chance racing up a sanddune so I planned hit it hard but I started way too and launched in a wheelie threw the whoops and lost control of the throttle and was pinned. I ended up looping it out about 25 feet from the start in front of 100s of people and in the process cracked my tank at the cap with my knee when the bike landed on it. Had to use electrical tap right there on the spot because it was leaking too bad to ride back to camp. My friends thoroughly enjoyed this and still bring it up to this day.

Maybe it was just a bad mold/casting ? Mine has no cracks YET...
