Got Tips For A New WR426 owner?

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 2002 WR426. I had a xr650r before and uncorked it, jetted, piped etc. What do I do to the WR? It already has a white bros exaust w/ jet kit. Does it need to be Un-corked as well? Any feedback and maintenance tips would be greatly appreciated!!! :D

I have the same bike and I love it. :D I ride tight stuff so I added the Rekluse clutch to avoid stalling and the 03 yz450 ex cam to give it auto decompress with a little more zip down low. The stock pipe flows pretty well once your pull the pea shooter out of it.

After its warmed up and you stall or kill it, pull in the decomp lever and give it about 3-5 kicks to clean out the motor. Then take it to TDC, Then go just past TDC with the decomp lever in. And giver a full kick. it should light.

If not it may need a new plug.

I dont even have to get my ass off the seat to start mine.

Good luck

Eric

I've had my 02 426 for a few weeks now, and it's been a peach to start. Maybe it's because of the 450 exh. cam, or simply the way it's been setup.

Spec is:

'02 WR426F

Skimmed and flowed head

Full Acropovic exhaust

WR450F exhaust cam

YZ timed

From cold: Choke out, goes 1st kick

Warm: No choke, goes 1st kick

When i banged it into the floor riding MX: Hot start out, no choke: 1st kick, push hot start straight in.

The bike is the first for stroke i've owned with a kicker only, and it's so easy to live with. I just boot it once, and she fires straight up all the time.

I can only imagine there's a jetting problem if it doesn't run straight off the bat every time.

First of all, take it easy. It should light off easily when warm. You really don't need the hot start unless you've laid it down. I've never used that red knob even after dropping it.

Since you can start it (easily) when it's cold, does it idle normally when warmed up? Reason being is the idle setting can affect the hot starting if the idle is set too low.

When my '02 is warm it only takes one smooth kick to fire it up. It's very much like your old XR650R. Just do not give it any throttle at all. Once you're at TDC, pull in the decomp lever and push the kickstarter down about 1"-2" past TDC, release the lever and the kickstarter, then give it a smooth steady kick.

If somehow you end up flooding a warm engine, do the 10-12 kick clean out drill and then use the same technique as above. Good luck. You'll get it down.
