03-04 was pretty much the same engine, it hit very hard and turned muscled forearms into Jell-O. It was a monster of an engine, and took alot of skill to ride to its full potential. For 2005 Yamaha toned down the YZ450F, and it lossed about three horsepower. Thats good news for everybody except Chad Reed.

suspension got better for each year, and power characteristics got worse, IMO.

all three of them are awesome bikes. The 03 "was" a rocket but most 03's now are a little long in the tooth. The 04 had better suspension and a little less hit however it was still a rocketship. The 05 has even better suspension and the motor is smoother....not slower.....smoother.

However, unless your are a hardcore semi-pro racer, they are all awesome and more bike than you will ever need.
