Help I have a problem....

Recommended Posts

Ok Guys here goes..

Out tonight....and the following happened..

Bike started what felt like Sneezing only in 5th gear under high load...all other gears fine..

Now the bike only in 5th, if you ticklet the throttle in 5th all is ok, but if you nail it, it then revs up a little, pulls then revs up a little, pulls then revs up a little... but only in 5th you can nail 1,2,3,4, no problem but 5th has now gone from sneezing to reving up a little then pulls... (get a max of about 60mph now), but 4th up to 70mph...

Though it was fuel starvation at first, but now feels like clutch slip...but its only in 5th..

Gear Box ??? but why only 5th, and would it not just, not engage or spin up with no drive

Clutch ??? but why only 5th

Thanks in advance for any advice..

DM (with the Right hump now)

It sounds like a clutch problem. It's typical for clutch problems to appear in higher gears first, probably because the motor has to work much harder to turn the higher gears.

What year bike and how many miles? Perhaps it's just time for a new clutch?

I don't know what the sneezing means, but the reving up and then pull is your clutch wearing out.

It's only doing it in 5th because your gearing is tallest in 5th and is the greatest amount of load that your bike will see. When you shift into 4th, you're actually putting less load on the clutch requiring a less amount of friction to engage your tranny.

This is the easiest to check also. Lay your bike on it's side and remove the cluch cover plate. Remove the 6 bolts and springs, then start pulling out your clutch plates. (remember what order they are in) The little pads on your clutch plates are probaly really thin.

Hi Thanks Guys...

Is a WR450 03, has about 2000 miles on it.... have spoken to people and its not jumping its feels like its slipping They say 5th is the 1st gear to go... so I'm gonna go with a new clutch as its the cheapest, then if it not that its engine time...

Question: Over here there is no Difference in Price from OEM, EBC or Barnett, so is it better to get Genuine Yamaha Clutch or Barnett

Many thanks for you help.. Finger crossed it not the Tranny

I remebered a tip I read in Dirt Rider once.

When installing the new clutch plates, soak the new plates in oil overnight before the install. It helps decrease the amount of break-in time. The bike should be ready to ride after the install is done.

Great tip! I used to do this all the time with my YZ80. :D

Hi,

I checked when I bought the bike and yes its had the Woodruff keys 04 Modification, Its defo the GearBox, as its only doing it in 5th, and no other gear, Clutch has now been replace...and searching through the threads on here it can only be Gearbox or Clutch...

I have got the Manual, but as Most of you on here have taken your engines out due to this kind of thing just wondered if there where any Hints and Tips, that are not covered in the Manual.

Thanks again Guys ...
