04 WR Start Botton - Help!!

Recommended Posts

I am in need of a quick fix for a starter button. The stock unit blew apart on me the other day and i can not seem to find a part from my local dealers. My question is this: can I use a kill switch as a starter button?? Being that both units should run on a 2 wire set up I think it should work but wanted to get some input from the crew here before I started the work. What do you think, can I use a kill switch as a Start button??

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Yes you can use a kill switch as a starter button. I used the black one shown in the picture on this link.

I order another one for your stock kill switch too. It's only a matter of time before that one falls apart too.

If you unplug the factory kill button it will plug right in where the factory start button goes. The wires are the same length and it works just fine. You still have the on/off button for killing the engine. I NEVER use the kill button, always the on/off button anyway. :applause:

Now this is just my opinion, but using the ignition switch to shut off the engine might not be a good idea. Believe it or not we have a similar situation on our rigs at work, and we've been told by our mechanics never to use the ignition to kill the engine as it can fry components in the electrical system such as circuit boards, cdi computers, etc. The kill switch is there for a reason, so my philosophy is to be better safe than sorry :applause: ...SC

I use the KILL button....when I'm starting my WR. I'll hold it down for 2-3 cycles if she's being difficult(like at high altitudes or such), when I release it she fires immediately. I use when she's flooded too...it works great!

the stock kill button will work fine. if you buy an after market, get one that has two wires going into the body of the switch. if you get the CR style (one wire attaches to the clamping screw) be careful how you wire it. you don't want to wire the ignition side to the clamping screw wire. it would be like holding the button down all the time. grounded.

Both, the kill, and the start button are not top quality stuff. The day after I rode my 05 WR450 in the rain it would not start, either kicking or the starter would not get it started it took 3 hours of tearing my bike apart to find the guts of the kill switch had disintergrated and was in stuck in the kill position. I harvested the one from my 2000 wr400 that did the trick.

I did this also. Get a kill switch from a YZ with a flat button. The plugs DON'T match, you will have to back out the wires and put the plug from the starter button on the end of the new kill switch. Plug it back up and you are ready to go. I was lucky enough to get a freebee from a buddy that was parting one out. One thing you can do to help ripping the button off is put a small strip of duct tape over the button. I used clear tape.

$20 for a kill switch ?

I ordered a $9 YZ switch for my gasgas from here:

Or you can get the Moose version for $12 from the same place...

bruno.

Thanks for the info. Always good to have competitive pricing. :applause:

The reason I posted the link was for the picture. I get pretty sweet deals on parts from the local Yamaha dealer. The parts guy is one of my racing buddies.

I've had the same problem with the start button numerous times. My friends thought I was doing something weird with my thumbs to cause it to break so many times. My fix for the starter was to buy a CRF450-X starter button, cut of the Honda connector, cut off the Yamaha connector to the old starter switch, and connect the two disparate items using quick disconnects. I haven't had a problem in probably 8 mos.

I've done basically the same thing with the kill switch, except I've used a cheap YZ kill switch. When the kill switch goes to hell, I just buy another one, cut off the end, attach a couple of quick-disconnects and plug it in.

I think the starter switch was like 30 bucks and even though it's a Honda part, it's worth having.
