chain slipping only in 2nd?

I went out riding today on my 01 650L and the chain starting slipping on the counter shaft sprocket. Sprockets are stock and chain tension is straight.

Any ideas? It pulls strong in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th. It only does it in 2nd, which is pretty weird.

I havent service the chain or anything lately so I'm completely baffled. :applause:

Maybe the countershaft sprocket is completely worn out? Something is wrong for sure, most likely a worn out chain and sprockets. Good luck with it.

It is your dogs on second gear. It only does it when pulling hard on full hook-up once in second. It's from the way you have been shifting. I did it and had to replace second, third and fifth. second gets hammered the most from the torque and when you need to shift. On the XR650R the gears where not made to do clutchless shifts. It is not the chain! This is what it is for sure.

Damn, so I guess the Rekluse is going to cost me some transmission problems in the future cuz it really slams home that 1st to 2nd shift. What is the work and cost associated with this repair?

It'll cost you the gaskett kits, and the two gears associated with second gear (both will be on the same shaft). You could get away with doing it yourself for around $300.00.. I did my '95 XR650L when it it started doing the exact thing - second gear took a dump.

Sprocket teeth and chain all seem to be normal.

BWB is probably right. Too many clutchless shifts!

Is there any web info or links to guide through this repair. i need to do it myself. already put too much money in this thing this year

I am undergoing a repair for the same exact problem right now (mine is 1st gear). It is the dogs that are slipping! Hopefully I'll have mine back in a couple of weeks. Good Luck!! :applause:

The DRZ and XR's were not made to do clutchless shifts. Some of the guy's with auto clutch thought it was fine but, I talked to the owner of Rekluse and he said, these two bikes are not holding up to clutchless shifts. Now the time is coming where we are getting the proof.

If you're splitting the L cases anyway, you can put in a kickstarter and an XR600R tranny if you like.

I'm dying to hear how hard it is to kick an L, and if the 600 tranny gear spacing works well on-road.

XR650L_Dave,

The ONLY difference between the XR600 gearset and the XR650L in terms of ratio is first gear. Second gear on up is exactly the same. The XR600R's 1st gear is slightly higher. Other than that, the gears are not interchaingeable between bikes unless you replace the entire gearset, including the main-shaft and the countershaft. I know... I tried!!!

XR600 gear ratios:
2.538 - 1st gear
1.650
1.250
1.000
0.840 - 5th gear

XR650L gear ratios:
2.670 - 1st gear
1.650
1.250
1.000
0.840 - 5th gear

So if you put a 15-tooth front sprocket on the 600R, it will have the exact final drive ratios in every gear as an XR650L, except first.

It also explaines the huge gap from first to second on the 650L, which is why 2nd is usually the first to go..

I shift without using the clutch all of the time on my 650L. I don't do it under load though, not after replacing second gear. Looking at the subtle differences in the design between the XR600R and 650L gearset, I understand why the 650L tranny cannot be hammered and abused like the gearset on the 600R. You won't get away with it for very long.

well, i never use 1st gear so i dont think that would apply to me.

The only thing I can think of offhand that would make your first gear go out like everyone elses second gear is if you are in neutral and slam it down into first with the engine revved, clutch or not.. It wouldn't take many times to do it either.. Or you maybe just had an accidental roach part in there from the factory.

Thank you. l am running 15/45 sprockets and seem to be short on the torque now. I think the bike is mostly stock (94 XR600R).
What do you think the most reliable way is to get it out of her?

Just curious, is it possible you are short shifting into second(shifting at to low an rpm) and the chain is bucking and jumping up and down as you lug the motor, or is there an actual mechanical disconnect ? My old elsinore 125 would throw the tightest of chains(or bog and die) if short shifted from 1st to 2nd. Just a thought, always better to diagnose before teardown rather than after.

There is no room the the 650L chain to jump around like that.. A chain that is too loose on a 650L will actually wrap around the countershaft then snap, as my original chain did back in November of 1996.

It pinned between the countershaft sprocket and the swingarm, and it just snapped.
