strange noise

on my buddys 450 after he kicks it and its running you can still hear the kick start gear dragging inside ? sound like when you push back the kicker when the bike is already running ? any thoughs before i take it apart?

Has he changed to a different brand of engine oil immediately before this symptom appeared? If yes, change back again

this will be the bikes first oil change.. its new it has about 5 rides on it

Sounds like the ratchet wheel is failing to cam back away from the kick starter gear. Look for a broken lug on the ratchet wheel, broken sring, disengaged snap rings, splines twisted, stuff like that.
