newbie question

hey.....really dumb question, but I just got the bike without a manual.....and very new to the xr650r, but can anyone explain the choke lever positions. Why would I need half choke. And what are the positions....is full choke with the lever pointing straight down, half choke, then closed when it is tucked away?

All the way down is open, All the way up is closed, Half way is to run as it warms up in real cold places.
