another miserable jetting question....

I have a 2k WR and have just fouled my first plug after 3 months of ownership. I was experiencing the usual bog when going from idle to wfo. First went to 2 turns out on airscrew - didn't fix it, then moved the clip from #3 to #4. Went for a ride and it ran great the entire time. Started it up to show a friend 1 week later it ran for about five minutes, stalled and that's all she wrote. My question is how far out should I set the airscrew for starters as to not gunk any more plugs. BTW exhaust is stock, airbox removed, stop trimmed, uncorked....

Ok, so you never fouled a plug, then you played with the pilot and needle, and now it's fouling? Why not start over? The bikes are stock lean, especially if you've uncorked the exhaust and pulled the airbox. #4 on the DRS needle (stock '00) is pretty rich. Maybe drop down to #3, or try another leaner needle and drop the clip to #4.

Also, is your air filter clean? Is the oil fresh? How clean do you think the carb is?

It's hard to get the bog to go away completely if you're used to a 2-smoke. The accelerator pump will inherintly make it bog a little if you turn the gas on too much at once. Maybe try and turn the gas a little slower, instead of twisting it real fast. If it still bogs at a slower twisting rate, check into jetting more. My '00 took about 6 months to setup and learn wht works on it. I'm still learning!

Whenever asking about jetting, please post your exact setup, current setting, altitude/temps state. Sometimes you'll find someone with the same or similar setup that can give you advice directly. Or other times folks will make suggestions and you'll get closer to perfection.

Sorry, I meant to get all the info. in the post but I had a very cranky 4 month old to deal with while trying to post. Anyhow, there were 3 reasons while I started to fiddle with the jetting 1)excessive backfiring 2)white plug 3)bogging. So what you're saying is I likely won't be able to stop the fouling with the airscrew while the clip remains in #4? BTW I ride at 0'-2000'.

i've just fitted a 48PJ with a 125 Pilot Air Jet & it works. why not buy the PAJ in a screw version. i hope that in the next week i can announce a big breakthrough in the jetting for this model & it includes going up in PAJ sizes

I had it out 2 full turns, what is the limit I can turn out the airscrew before changing needle position and or jet??? Thanks for the responses.

It isn’t an air screw, the manual refers to it as a pilot screw, I like to call it a fuel screw because it meters fuel, not air. So out is richer, not leaner.

As for “how much is too much” I should leave that to the experts (JD) but if you are less than ½ turn out or more than 2.75 turns out you may want to change pilots.

Even though you’ve had 3 months to get used to a thumper (your “airscrew” comment gives you away as a former two-stroke owner) you may have just fouled the plug with the accelerator pump.

You busted me, last bike was a smoker. You should see my 2stroke buddies when I start saying accelerator pump. Fuel screw, fuel screw, fuel screw, fuel screw. Out means richer, out means richer, out means richer. Now maybe I'll remember. Thanks all for the info. BTW when I do start it, my right hand always goes on the crossbar.

The needle profile (code DRS) determines what clip should be used. DR- indicates the taper starts very high and will run richer than most others at 1/4 throttle in clip #4. To go to clip #3 can make a lean hesitation or bog as you experienced at 1/16-1/8 throttle (from the code --S).

The pilot screw on my bike was at about 4 turns when I bought it used! (#42 pilot) A reasonable limit would be 3 turns to prevent having it fall out. Then consider a bigger pilot jet like Hick already said.
