I don't know if this'll work but here's a quick pic of my 1993 XR650L, disguised as an XR600R with a Baja Designs kit.

this one sat for a few years while I rode my 650r. But now the R is gone replaced by a lighter orange bike. So the 600 is getting a little more love now. New wheels and fenders so far.

My latest addition is a rear luggage container that can be quickly removed.    I really like this container because I can use it for daily commuting then remove it for trail riding.

Be forewarned that you will break your rear frame with any sort of load on the rear. The XRL frame is nothing more than an XR600R frame with a few additional mounting points added for horn, cooling ears, etc. The rear frame was never intended to support any sort of load and ALWAYS cracks when carrying a load. A rack that helps remove the load from the rear frame like the cycleracks rack might help. The downside is that the struts look like they could break your leg if you ever went down on the trail with one.

Hello and thanks for the information(lecture).   Of course the rear rack isn't designed to carry much weight.   After 25+ years of engineering and 35+ years of riding over 15 motorcycles I know what I am doing.   FWIW, there are more than 5 aftermarket manufactures that make racks for the XR650L.

:lol:  I guess you have a one of a kind super frame. I didn't know that experience makes your bike stronger  :goofy:

Fact:   My XR650L luggage rack attaches to the main frame the motorcycle.   The rack attaches to the frame that supports my weight and the weight of any passenger as shown here:

Fact:  My XR650L luggage rack does not attach to the rear sub-frame of the motorcycle show inside of the main frame here:

Hello again,

 

Moreover, the XR650L frame uses triangular web that consists of a 1" front tube,   3/4" upper tube and a 3/4" rear gusset, strut, brace or whatever your want to call it.   These are hardened steel tubes designed to support the rider's and passenger's weight.     Please note that the rear luggage rack is attached directly to the upper 3/4" tube.    Please stop misinforming readers that this is a problem.

If the upper 3/4" tube fails then I just got hit by a semi-truck because there is no other way this tube will break.

Alright Mr. Know-it-all (engineer... shoulda guess that one). I didnt say that your SUB frame would break. The rear main frame WILL break. They all do. Put your engineering prowess to work and look at the cycleracks rack and see how it connects to the passenger peg mounts (it was probably NOT designed by an engineer... go figure). Oh and excuse me for trying to save you from the same grief that tons of other folks have experienced with racks just like yours.

I agree thumpnred I installed a pro moto rack with the manracks hog leg bracket,not much support but I don't carry much.

Please provide objective evidence that Honda made a mistake on this motorcycle frame that has been in productions for 30+ years.

You are very correct that the frame has been in production for many years. As I said in my first reply to you, the frame started out as a dirt bike frame (XR600R). Honda never intended to have anything anything greater than a tool bag loaded on the rear frame (why do so many people hold Honda engineering as the gold standard?). Research will show you that they XR650L is not a purpose-built dual sport bike. It IS a dirt bike that Honda tinkered with to make it streetable. Heavier flywheel, street legal electrics, lower compression engine, mild state of tune,electric start to name a few of the changes. The only changes made to the frame however was adding mounting points for turn signals, oil separator, etc. There was nothing done to the rear frame that would allow it to carry a load. The rear bolt on "subframe" is really nothing more than a fender support. The rear of the XRL frame is actually quite spindly. I have seen (with my own eyes) more than one of them bend (noticeably) in fairly minor trailside mishaps. Spend a few minutes browsing through this site. You will find plenty of objective evidence.

I would like to ask opinions on the sw motech subframe supports(pic attached). I bought then to support my wolf man bags. I understand I can't haul around huge loads I was hoping these would help. But after reading this I am starting to doubt their effectiveness. If I recall they bolt to the rear passenger pegs. Does the main frame always break before or after the pegs? Also is it even safe to put a passenger on my bike. Starting to dislike my Honda...

Thank you for the historical information. (I'm old enough to have live through all of those years.......and I remember when the XR's started production)    I have seen no objective evidence to suggest that the additional 10lbs of weight that I place on the rear of my motorcycle will damage the frame.    I am open to any conversation that does not include personal insults or unsubstantiated claims.
