Just brought this nicely set up 2006 home:)
Clarke tank, Dave's carb mods..PO did everything very nicely.
Turning the petcock on for the first time however caused gas to spew out all over my driveway !
It was pouring from both tubes and I am not yet sure why.

Make sure your bowl drain screw is closed. If so then your float valve is probably stuck open.

That makes sense. I think perhaps it's both the drain screw and the float valve since gas was coming from booth tubes.
I wondered if that screw at the bottom of the float bowl was a drain, and tried to turn it but it did need seem to want to turn easily so I didn't force it; I will try again. I assume is clockwise to close?
To get to the float valve I am guessing the float bowl will had to be removed?
I drive old airheads (1985GSPD) and the float bowls are just clipped on......looks a little more work on the XR.
Thanks for your help, this is a great forum and I have been reading a lot to learn about my new XR.....I can't wait for spring to get it out in the woods.

HI, I'm Chance... this is the latest project. a 95 XR650L. had carb mods, (600 carb tuned for the 7000 ft altitude, I am told) has an XRs Only complete system. I got it from a friend who broke the selector shaft, and tried to fix it himself. He got frustrated when it didn't work, (had a gear in wrong) and has a new(er) KTM sitting in the garage, so he sold to me for about the price of dirt. I tore it down, re-ringed, fixed the problem in the trans, did the clutch, and here it is. I have been taking it easy on it for awhile to let everything set in, but it has only 6300 miles now. Tomorrow it goes on it's first trail run since becoming mine. Cold weather be damned....I'm going riding.

nice work Chance! Have a nice ride. What elevation do will you normally ride? Since it is set up for 7k feet and newly rebuilt, have you checked the plug to make sure it is not running lean? just a thought.

Thanks Bdub600! We usually ride at or above 7000+, (Jemez mountains in New Mexico, above the Valle Caldera, or around Los Alamos area) yesterday we went down some, to about 5500, somewhere in there, and it ran very well.

I have not pulled the plug as of yet since the rebuild, as it only has a few hundred miles on the new rings. Took it fairly easy on it yesterday, but it pulled very well. I got a box o parts in yesterday with spare plugs, so now that you mention it, I should pull it and see what it looks like. Guy I was riding with, who is the guy I got it from, said when he was following me there was no smoke, black or blue, and made a comment about "smelled just like a thumper ought to smell".. I did notice when I rode it when it was his a couple times, you get it up around 9k and it stuttered a little when you let off it, but where we were at yesterday it ran real nice.

edit: where we ride...

you're right!
Now the brake hose is perfectly fixed to the fork... That situation was quite dangerous in off-road riding!
The little black box on the left side of the frame is a collector of all drain and vents connection of engine and carburetor, it's mandatory for racing on many tracks here to avoid engine fluids to fall on the race track...
