hop-ups for TTR125-L

I'm considering getting one of these bikes for my wife, but she's 5ft 9" tall so I would need to put taller bars or risers on to accomodate her. Is there a cheaper way to go than the BBR triple tree riser setup? Also are there any cheap ways to get more power out of these bikes? Does anybody make taller seat foam for them? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Erik

Instead of the 125 you may want to look at the kawi KLX300. Not to much power, better for the height of wife, reasonably priced. I real good bullet proof bike. I had one when I first got back into riding. A great bike for the casual riding, will climb anything, good rolling power due to the cv carb. You may want to think about that bike as well and you will not have to mod it.

I had a friend who had trouble starting his KLX300 quite often... but I don't know if it was just him or the bike.... and if you get a girl a bike that is tough to start she will not want to go riding at all... .02c

Eric, I just bought my wife a 125L going to pick up riding gear tomorrow and give it a try Sunday. The bike starts totally easy 1st kick and effort through the lever. Which is confidence inspiring. You can get tall bend bars should for more room. White bros. already have a pipe/ muffler combo with jetting changes should give it a little more umph(check spelling) I rode it up and down the street (first impression) Its not a ball of fire but seems to pull just fine especially for a beginner. Plus side my daughter will grow into it in about a year so it looks like it will be around for awhile.

Hey guys,

I bought my wife a 125L as well. I gotta say Yamaha did a great job. Needs a little more power for experienced riders, but hey it sure is a great platform.

I saw an interesting product called a thrust chamber for the stock exhaust on the follow site. For 29.95 I figure its worth a try.

I'm getting married again next year and hope to convince my new bride to take up dirtbiking with me. She's 54 but looks 34 and I would be in Heaven if she would enjoy this as much as I do. I asked her recently if she would consider giving it a try, she wouldn't commit to anything. She rode a motorcycle for the first time with me when I took her for a very slow lap around my local track on the back of my 426. She was terrified. How did you guys get your sweethearts to want to start riding?

Thanks for the info you guys have sent me so far, please send me more. I sold my wifes xr-200 last night because it was awkward to ride in the stand up position.(not to mention it was a little on the heavy side for my frail wife to pick up). There aren't any aftermarket mods for them either. The ttr seems to have a better footpeg to bar ratio which would make it better for riding while standing up. As for getting my wife into riding? well, lets just say it has been an ongoing challenge for two years now.

Erik a TTR125 is to samll for your wife my wife is 5'9 and she rides the TTR250 if anything i would go with a TTR225 or the TTR250 both have [E] buttons and good power,my wife rides this bike ever were i go,i also daul sported it.

I agree, the 125L is going to be too small. I'd go for the KLX, lower seat and more power for when she wants it, than any 250. With the possible exception of the 250F. Actually you may even want to think about that...
If I were you I'd stay away from the TTR225, way too heavy, no suspention, geared to low, no kick start, very very cold blooded, carb problems, did I say too heavy.
Seriously the KLX is the probably the answer. Its green, used ones are cheap and you can always spray paint it blue...

Following are my lessons, learned the hard way:

The key for any riding, especially for women is that is has to be FUN.

To start with get a machine that is easy to ride - small, low on power, controllable, light... When you get them hooked, then buy up.

Second, start riding in ideal weather in the easiest place you find, like an open field with no bumps. Also, if there aren't other riders around, they will feel less self conscious. A female ego is delicate. It has to be easy and enjoyable if you want repeat riding.

Third, be patient. It will take a while to learn. If she doesn't want to go, don't pressure, it will only be detrimental.

My wife rides a Polaris Scambler 400 4x4, automatic. For her it is fun when the weather is nice and the riding conditions are good. A motorcycle is not her idea of fun. I have no illusion that that will change, For me going riding on quad trails with her is much better than not at all.

Married 15 years and still loving it :)

I forgot to mention that the reason I sold my wifes xr-200, because it was too heavy and the stand-up riding position was awkward, so that leaves out the bigger bikes, such as the 225 and 250 Yamahas. I havent looked at the kawi's yet because I just hate green bikes (although I'm sure they're fine quality bikes). I guess the real question is "can you modify the 125-L for a taller person without spending $1000.oo on upgrades from someone like BBR? Does anyone sell taller seat foam? Thanks again, Erik

Thumper Racing will have everthing you need from bars riser to engine hopups and jetting.

Monty, my girlfriend just purchased a TTR 250. She started on an XR100, the only problem is the TTR is a little tall for her (5'4"). How can I lower the bike? Do you know if a narrower (WR, YZ) seat will fit it. I think that would help her touch the ground, at least once in awhile!!
By the way, with a girl, e-start is the ONLY way to go.

I can't recommend the KLX300 due to difficult starting. I friend has one, everytime he dumps it, it's about 20 kicks to get the fire going (his kicks). About the same when cold.

I'd go with a ttr250. The seat hight would be good. They are real plush to ride. The electric start is always enjoyable. Easy to make street legal as well (In NH).

My Little brother owns a TTR 125L
I found this tip, it sounds like it helps without spending a penny.

copied a Gordon Banks XR exhaust trick for the TTR exhaust. The TTR end cap is very similar to an XR's in that it has a small exhaust opening surrounded by a recessed ring. The recessed area is still within the spark arrestor.
I drilled 12 holes in this area with a 9/64 bit. By my calculations it almost doubles the exhaust opening size and still keeps the use of the spark arrestor. Made a big difference in the midrange and top end. Jetting still seems fine. The exhaust note in not loud but it sounds very sweet. This little bike is cool! Airbox will be my next venture. Looks like some major improvement can be had there also but I bet I'll have to adjust the jetting. Cost of the exhaust mod was $0 unless you consider the 10 minutes of my time it took.
