I've been reading about the different ways to check chain sag and stuff and most say you need the rear of the ground, cold chain, etc. Is it possible to just give it a quick check on the sidestand by checking the play in the chain? How much free play is normal.

Don't adjust/check the slack while it's rear tire is suspended in the air, you'll get a false reading. You should be sitting or have weight on the seat. Rule of thumb has always been to be able to squeeze 2 fingers in snug between the swingarm and the chain. I check mine between the chain slider and the chain itself. I think the manual states 1 1/2" of play.
