This is probably a stupid question, but what the hell. I thought "BRP" was specific to a 650R. I've seen the L crowd, no offense guys, and even a guy with an '83 XL600 call his a pig, what gives? I'm not trying to make this an over 650cc-watercooled frat or anything just wondering what the unwritten or written for that matter, rule is.

Okay, I won't call my 87 XR6 a pig anymore. Its more of a horse anyway ;-)

I'm really sorry.
I'm a newbie that transgressed this obviously sensitive ground by calling my '83 XL600R a "Piggie". I didn't think of it as a pig anyway after waxing THREE 650R's this very weekend with the old POS.I am also 63 years old, and had open heart surgery, and have diabetes.But- I can ride like there won't be a tomorrow.
I have apologised further in my "uncorking necessary" thread below.
And you are 100% correct........stupid question.

I think the XL500/XR500R was the first Big Red Pig. Then the XR600R/XR600L and now the XR650R. I think the XR650L is the only real "True" BRP now being it is the heaviest. Then the XR650R and finaly the XR600R. It was a bad name at first that the Two Smoke guys would say to someone with a XR because, it was so big and heavy without the Two Smoke power. (I remember in 84 with my XR500, I was safe because I also had a 84 YZ490) Now it is a loving term used by the owners. With the ability to make 42hp out of a XR600R to the ground (up to 48hp if you tare into it) and 48hp out of the XR650R to the ground (58+ taring into it) and winning the Baja, other races and some big name riders having there name atached to them these bike are no longer big bikes for old farts. The only bike that has been left without power and way to heavy for the XR name is the XR650L, It should have been given the old XL650 name. It is what the BRP name was given for in the first place. Low horsepower to weight ratio. Steel tank, made for the street. Nice bike for what it was made for but, not a race bike.

When you dump it and have to pick it up its a BRP. I call mine "pig" affectionately. Much like handling a real pig(old farm boy) it takes some getting use to, they are heavy and can be unruly but if you learn how they behave it gets easier. Ever try to catch a pig, no really. Lots of power and low end grunt and hard to stop to boot. Good Luck and enjoy your motorcycle thats what its all about, no matter what size or color.

Let's see, my bike is:

a. Big

b. Red

c. Handles like a pig

But hey, if 650 guys believe that their newer bikes are even worse pigs than my ancient 600 and therefore more deserving of that rather derisive name, who am I to argue with such logic?

it's not just you, EVERYONE LIKES TO FEEL SPECIAL AND EXCLUDE OTHERS FROM the "in" crowd.

the term BRP was around way before the 650R, FYI :naughty:

I have 5 bikes. One of which is an 02 XR650L. When I ride it to work it MAKES me SMILE!!! That's precisely why I own it. When I quit smiling I'll quit riding it. By the way. As far as street steads go. My pig weighs much less than almost all bikes on the street & outruns most. Often times on the rear wheel!!!
Have fun!!
