Yamaha WR200's the good the bad?

Recommended Posts

dude don't talk about crap you don't know about, there is a WR200, just hasn't been imported in quite a few years.

I really don't know much about the bikes myself, but they look like they would probably be decent trail bikes. There 2 stroke 200s, so they probably have decent power. If he is thinkin this is a good bike for a kid who can't fit on the full size bikes yet hes wrong, its a full size woods machine.

Question on a '98

They're out there and apparently still on the road.

Can't vouch for the good and bad, but I would say that a 10-15 year old dirtbike that's still on the road is either as good as the modern blue bikes, or never been ridden :naughty:

the wr200 uses a 200cc street bike engine

it is somewhat design as a domestic bike from japan

we had abundant of them in sg

just that the smooth power chararcteristic does't really suit aggressive off road riding

We have wr200 and wr250 ("newer" ones) here in Brazil. They are both great trail bikes. Pretty reliable too. I had no idea their engine came from street bikes, they look like your usual off-road engine. I like MX bikes better though (even for trail riding) they feel a lot lighter and thinner, but on the other hand the wr's have a lot more traction...

:naughty: PSSST! Hey... I'll let you in on a little secret... WRs used to be 2strokes back in the late 80's and most of the 90's. The WR200 was originally a canadian :D dirtbike, available to the US for a year or two (1992 model) It was nothing like the WR250Z. You could probably compare it to a KDX200. But there is such a thing and they do exist :D

freestyle250 Eu morei uns anos nos Estados Unidos, mas sou brazuca mesmo!!!

Just to make it clear, when I said "wr250 ("newer" ones)" I really meant wr250 (the 2 stroke one), not the wr250f...

Isn't it great that so many people who don't know any motorcycle history are so willing to talk shit, when a simple google search would have allowed them to realize there was such a bike 15 years back when WR's were all 2 strokes, and that the WR replaced the blue IT series. :naughty:

For sure. There even was a WR500 for one or two years. I'd like to get my hands on one.

Plenty around - WR stood for Wide Ratio....they were a YZ for enduro use, over here they came with lights but were not street legal, just like a KDX200,obviously where the product was aimed. There was a DT200WR as well.I have a DT230,same motor a bit bigger with electric start, electronic power valve and oil injection....cause it's a street bike. The WR200 motor has been around forever and is well sorted - a good rider could win any NZ enduro on one, where it's advantagous to have a light quick turning bike.

One of the better older bikes around. I am about to sell my YZ and buy either a DT200 or a WR200 (same motor) because they are road registrable over here. The WR200 I think were based off of the YZ125 frames of the time and had a DT200 motor put into them. Good suspension and brakes with a smooth 200cc motor. Electric power valve and oil injected (i think. They were on the DT200's) almost like an early KTM200. Great bike. :naughty:

  • 3 weeks later...

I owned a 92 WR200 back in 93-96. With FMF exhaust, that rascal really ripped. It was a VERY durable bike. I ran it for three years on the original top end and it still ran great when I sold it. It is not as heavy as it looks, but could be a bit trimmer.

Compared to the IT series, the WR200 is about a light year ahead in durability. I had ITs in their years. While the IT200 was a good performing machine, the footpegs sagged, the kickstand flopped around, the seat sacked out, and the whole bike felt old pretty quickly. One season of 200A riding and my 85 IT200 felt clapped out.
