I drained both, I also pulled the filter. The filter looks like the K & N type filter (maroon color) and it wasnt paper so i cleaned it and put it back. On the oil filter cover, what type of gasket or seal is there to seal it on? I didnt seem to find one. So today ill start it up, let it warm up, let it sit for 5 min. check the dipstick add/subtract if needed.

There are 3 small O-rings and one the size of the cover. No gasket.

Mine used to groan too, started using Yamalube 4R and problem solved. :) Be sure to change you oil every third or forth ride too, as it's a small amount (1 1/2 qrts) and contaminates quickly.
