Anyone Running 14 / 46 Sprocket Combo

Recommended Posts

Anyone running this combo.?..and thoughts on how the gearing works out. I have an Ironman 46 that has been sitting unused, and am considering putting it on. Just don't want to lose too much low end, slower riding, capability...

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Mitch

I've always heard that 1 tooth in front equals 3 in the back so a 14/45 = 15/48 or there abouts. I usually run stock (14/48) for technical desert stuff and 15/48 for open stuff. Gonna try 14/47 for a compromise to see how that works. With 14/48 I can get about 85 mph on a flat paved road and 98 to 100 with 15/48 (not that that means squirt for desert riding). 15/48 is a real blast in long open sandwashes.

Simple math. Top speed in all gears will increase by 4.4%. 48/46=1.0435

Next question. :naughty:

I am not shure what you have the R or the L but I have the L. Stock was 15/45, I changed to 14/48. The gearing is a little different from what you are wanting to try. With stock good for more than the dirt tire left you feeling comfertable with (100 for me but still a little room), with this gearing that I now have 85 max. I know it is no speed deamon when the adv speed is 65 mid. range but when everyone that I usualy ride with is 15/48 is using the breaks down the steep hills and I am using the motor to slow me down, it is worth it to me. When going up hill with the same guys I am in second and they are in first (so what you say, when they want to down shift and cant I can). I hope that this has not wasted your time but helped you out. I think that you will enjoy it if you ride more dirt than street.

Well I changed to 15/44 which is about 14/41 and I love it. Just right for road riding round twisty roads. I know you guys are running your gearing for off road but you really ought to try the XR on the road. It is a load of fun. :naughty:

This is a good question. I am running stock gearing but would like to gear mine down. I ride a lot of tight trails and hills out here in Oregon. I find myself stuck between 1st and 2nd a lot. I would like to keep my stock chain and adjust with sprockets so I can run in 2nd more. I am looking for just a slight adjustment so that I wouldn't loose too much top speed for those fire roads or when I do go to the desert. Can I make a change with just my counter shaft sproket to get slight difference? JC

Going from a 14 tooth to a 13 tooth counter sprocket. Hmmmm. Should work. It will reduce top speed in all gears by about 8%. Anyone else care to comment?

You already asked this question in a previous thread:

I thought it was properly answered with both the pros and cons. :naughty:

Just do it, best $12 you will spend. :naughty:

I'm sure this is a frequently asked question...so thanks for the patience of those who have heard this too many times before.

I'm considering 14/48 gearing too. I'm not positive though that this will give me what I want over stock...so any input would be appreciated.

I guess to best descibe what I'm looking for is more torque through the lower gears. I want it to pull like a bear 1-3 and throttle up the front wheel if you lean on it on pavement. Top speed is of no concern as the bike only sees the road from trail to trail.

Does the 14/48 setup meet the bill??? Thanks in advance!

Be careful what you read in this thread Chooch. It seems to be mixed information about both the 650L and 650R. They are two very different bikes with different stock sprocket gearing.

From what I read of yours you have the 650L. You may want to start another thread and ask specific ?'s about the "L".
