XR650 hard to start after a tip over.

I have a buddy that has an Xr650. One of the newer aluminum framed jobby's. I was just thinking about his bike and thought I would do a little research for him seeing as he is internet illiterate.

When he crashes on occasion and the bike stalls out while it is laying on its side it is a beast to get restarted. About the best trick we have found is to let it sit for about 10 minutes so the cylinder can clear some of the excess gas. Its flooded bad. When it does finially start is is blowing black smoke in a big way, obviousely flooded.

So is there some sort of Honda fix/trick to make the bike start easier. Some sort of carb adjustment that you folks have found to fix this.

Or is my buddy the only one that has this problem?

No, they are all like that. Unless you get a different carb they all do that.

But generally you can start it pretty easy after a fall. This is what I do

put it in neutral, press the decompressor lever, and open the throttle ALL THE WAY. Now give it 10 kicks.. After the 10 kicks with the throttle open and decompressor held. Now let go of everything, and give it a good kick. It should gire right up.

Works every time.

You forgot to mention holding the kill switch down while your giving it them 10 kicks.

Also if the bikes carb has never been touched it's very likely that the float will have to be adjusted 2 mm. So that it will shut the fuel off sooner. They come set up for the flat wide open desert but if ya ride trails with lots of hills it tends to over flow out the back of the carb into your airbox whenever you climb a slight grade. This will put the bike in a very rich running situation and it will often die on you specially after climbing a hill.

How do we adjust the float?

bend the little metal tang that touches the needle valve. It's spelled out in the manual which can be found oline, check the pigpen. My float height was set too high when I got my 650R and I had trouble till I put it back to spec, which I can't remember (the mm's).

So 2mm on the float and learn to swear a lot....Good stuff. Anything else.

Really though this is helpfull.

And for the E diddle diddle fella......bite me. I dont hang out in this forum and dont know the post history or bike quirks. I dont own a 650. Im just trying to help a friend.

Okay listen close. The float adjustment is a great suggestion.

But the way to crank this thing after flooding is as follows. Nothing else works like this procedure.

Pick bike up!

Kick slowly until you hit top dead center (TDC)(Thats the hard stop point)

Pull in compression release and push slowly past TDC pushing about 1 inch, let go of compression release.

Now hold throttle wide open and do not let it go at all until bike starts.

Now kick hard.

If it doesn't start the first time it alsmost always will by second or third.

There is no better way.

By the way using this method without the open throttle is also the best way to crank this bike under normal circumstances also.

Yeah, Dont forget to hold the kill button down while clearing it's lung so it don't backfire.....

My float level is at 16 mm from the carb's gasket flange to bottom of float,Carb inverted.....

This is my setting's I came up with on my own after having flooding prob's on steep hill's.....workin great.... ?
