On a 85 xr600 can you change the ac regulator out with a regulator/rectifier to run the lights off of dc and even for a battery charge. Some input would sure help.

Yes you can. I just dual-sported my '87 XR600 and did away with AC setup. My bike is now completely DC with a small 12v 0.8ah sealed lead-acid battery and charging circuit. All you need is a voltage regulator/rectifier assembly - I got mine from Baja Designs for about $35, plus a battery - I bought mine from Mouser for $12 and it is so small, about the size of a deck of cards, and fits inside the airbox with high-strength velcro. I mounted the new regulator/rectifier in the same location as the old AC regulator.
