Thinking about changing the gearing on my 05 450. What are you guys running for the track? Stock just isn't feeling right.

I went from a 51 to a 50 tooth on my '05 450 and like it very much. I felt that the 51 was dropping off a little too soon at top speed. The 50 matches my track and riding style just right :)

Thats I'm thinking, it drops off just a bit on the top end. How much did you lose on the bottom say in 2nd gear?

I run 15/48, same as 14/46. What's stock on the '05?

2nd gear didn't lose very much bottom at all, it will just rev out farther. Last weekend I was starting in 2nd gear and got the hole shot both motos :)

Dang, no wonder top end falls off. That's 250F gearing. '03/'04 was 14/48, and that was too low.

Yeah I know thats what the 03/04's run and I have been trying to figure out what way I want to go. I know the top falls off real quick on 05.

The 03 and 04 use 14/48 the 05 uses 14/51 but has different internal ratios. The final gearing is almost identical.

I understand that was done to keep the tranny and clutch spinning faster to allow softer clutch springs for a lighter lever pull.

I run mostly motocross and 14/45 works good for me. your riding style may vary.

This whole subject revolves around a couple of variables. First off for those who don't understand the 05 has a taller ratio number at the drive sprocket thus needing the larger rear sprocket to bring it back to near the 03/04 final gearing. On 03/04's a lot of guys tamed the bike down by going with a smaller rear sprocket. This makes the gearing a little taller and spreads the gaps between the gears just a little. Most guys were looking to utilize second gear with an occasional shift into third. For me personally I found it more to my liking to do just the opposite. I went a couple teeth up on the rear and ran third most of the time. I used second to get over the gate grabbed third and pretty much left it there. This set up also made 4th a little closer to third and more useable when i was on a long enough straight to grab another gear. I am assuming I'm going to do the same with my 05. It all comes down to rider preference and feel. Don't be afraid to experiment with the gearing a little bit. Just think about what the bike feels like and what you want to change about it and give it a try.
