First ride with my new pipe

Since I bought my new bike I've been unimpressed with the "new and improved" aluminum silencer on the 05 WRs. The internals of the pipe look like a Vortip or exhaust insert surrounded by aluminum with two small holes for the exhaust to get out. It's not a new design by no means but a good way to keep the exhaust note down to a minimum. Looking at the pipe on the outside it looks like a nice aluminum silencer with a clean euro style endcap. The downfall in my opinion is that the exhaust doesn't allow the bike to build power to its full potential. I jetted my bike to run perfectly, no hesitancy, no popping on deceleration just sweet, smooth power. Still the bike is mellow, real mellow. Nothing like I remember on my 03. After all the free mods I've done to the bike it still felt lazy to me. I came to the conclusion that the pipe had to go.

I've been looking around for an aftermarket exhaust pipe for the bike. I've owned Ti systems before and didn't feel like spending the money. My buddy Dave at my local Yamaha dealer knew my dilemma, he called me and informed me that someone at his shop messed up on and order and ordered the wrong pipe for another customer and had a GYT-R pipe that would fit my bike laying on the counter, and he could sell it to me for around 230.00 I ran down there and paid 239.00 for the pipe.

The GYT-R is beautiful but not as light as some Ti units that I've seen. After installing it all it took was a one push of a button to remind me of what I've been missing all this time. The bike sounded deep, throaty and purred like a kitten.

Friday my buddies and I went riding. I feel like I have a new bike. It's completely different, I feel like the bike has been bored to a 500, it's a dramatic change from stock and just plain pulls!! Tons of power that I've never felt with this bike.. I was blown away at the difference of power.

Riding the WR450 with stock pipe is uneventful and plain boring and too mellow for me.

I know the first reactions I will receive by authoring this thread..

Honestly, I don't feel it's that loud. My friend Derrik rode behind me and Derek on our WR's, Derrik told us that my 05 with the GYT-R was noticeably quieter that Dereks bike with his Powercore 4. If I were to guess, I would say my bike around 99dB's. Yamaha has a quiet cap for the bike that I'm going to get for anytime I ride in any OHV park or forest. I've owned several Pro-Circuit performance exhausts and I feel that the GYT-R unit it quieter. 239.00 is nothing for what this pipe does to the bike. I'm pumped...

I've received zero feedback here on this system, but as you mentioned regarding aluminum/stainless steel vs. carbon fiber/titanium, I'll probably go with the Comp vs. Pro and save the extra $200, since I'm not agonizing a pound or two; my Guinness consumption variations will negate any weight savings ?

I rode my WR for the first time in a couple of weeks yesterday (have been on orange); despite the stock exhaust, the WR felt wonderful (on throttle), powerful (easy long wheelies) and the suspension is light-years better that the KTM's out of the box -- felling a lot of "blue love" after yesterday, just need to fix the low rev carb issues and get the stocker exhaust off.

I bought a Big Gun Evo pipe and to be honest it didn't really make alot of difference, at least not as much as I hoped for. The race set up made the top end pull real well but it was way too loud, especially after a couple of long rides. The quiet insert was nice but it caused the end of the exhuast to get super hot and the logo melted off! I finally ended up taking it off and I'm gonna ride with my stock exhaust for awhile. I wish I woulda just saved my money ?

I took my WR450 with its new Powercore4 to Rabbit Valley for a day of single track.

I put in a thin plate with 1.75 inch hole to try to keep the sound down until the quiet insert gets here.

I will say that I did not expect a big change in power. Boy was I wrong. The Low end torque and throttle response was a shocker. Big power down low and stronger pull everywhere.?

Saved almost 5 lbs over the stock pipe and that was all high weight.

I did notice that the finish on the can got micro cracks in the finish after one ride. Pretty sad and I'm going to call FMF and see whats going on.

Overall quick install, and extremely satisfied with performance gains. ?

Math, FMF should take care of it for you. They're very good with any warranty issues as long as you don't begin by cussing them out, LOL!

Danno, sounds like you have it worked out. Sound is only an issue if certain people are expecting peace and quiet, and are present. I also hear that the White Bros E2 with medium insert is great on these bikes.

So far, my Q is trouble free. I came off the Powercore 4, and haven't noticed any top-end issues, but low end is snappier just off idle. Some people like it smoother, but I'm not too particular about power delivery as long as I can predict it.

Glad you got it worked out, now let's go ride.

My experience exactly. I put on my new Dr. D exhaust and low end responce was nuts! Like you say a new bike. I expected a small change in power but it was rippin. My sholders were sore from being pulled out of their sockets.

I've got a powercore 4 on mine with the "quiet" insert and decided to keep it. My friend tore open the stock muffler. There are 3 chambers to it, etc. The stock has a lot of internal resistance.

From looking at the picture, I can't see a rear mount on the GYT-R muffler. Are my eyes bad or isn't there a mount on top of that pipe?

Speaking of exhausts, I've had the a Muzzy's system on my 05 for about 3 weeks. I am using it with a quiet insert that the company claims reduces the noise level below 96 dbs. I'll probably remove it though. I've yet to see or here about noise testing anywhere I ride. I was impressed with the craftsmenship of Muzzy header and muffler. The welds on the titanium muffler are pretty, and all the pieces fit together perfectly, although it was tough to stretch those springs. It was nothing like all the bending and banging that I went through with the Big Gun system, which is now showing spots or rust poking through the "ceramic coating." Maybe Big Gun's ceramic coating is just a way to hide low grade steel.

I can't say enough about how much the power increased with the Muzzy's system over the stock pipe. It may be loud, but it's not an annoying loud like my friends 03 with no baffle. It's also nice to have a part that isn't very common in the dirt bike world. Five Stars.

I bought a White Brothers E2 from our fearless leaders at the TT store.

I haven't used it yet so I don't know about the power. I imagine it will be really loud with the insert in it.

It looks very nicely made.

The weather is so bad around here I haven't even bothered picking the bike up yet.

Chief, They feel about the same. I didn't get a chance to weigh either one, but the GYT-R didn't feel as light as Ti units that I've owned. They probably weigh the same. Both have a stainless midpipe design with an aluminum can, like most other pipes in the three hundred dollar range. ?

I just scored what I think was a sweet deal.

This guy was selling a chopped off YZ pipe. He had cut it so the end was even with the number plate. Starting bid $50.

Oh... it came with a ProMotoBillet spark arrestor ?

NOBODY but me bid on it.

So the same guy has a stock YZ pipe closing 1/2 hour later. One bid for $20. I hopped in and snagged it for $26.

So $109 with shipping, plus I'll have a pipe left over to put back on Ebay... I don't know whether I'll run the shorty or the stock YZ pipe... probably the stock YZ.

The night before, my buddy and I watched two go for $70 and $82, then 3 hours later my buddy got one for $40.
