Cable lube tool - Can't seem to get more down the cable than oozes out.

Are those cable lube tools the cat's meow or more blow than go? Everything I've tried ends up the same way - just as much lube on the outside as appears to go down the cable housing. Some directions indicate you've got enough when it starts oozing out the other end. Never got it to go that far. Either that or I'm going to have to start wearing my cheaters when I work on the bike.

One end of the tool is supposed to go over the silver cap on the end of your cable or the at least part of the cable housing, right?

I've thought about going back to just squirting WD40 down the cable housing and forget the tool. :)

Its either you or the brand of luber that you bought. If you can start a 250f you must be some what coordinated,so it must be your cable luber gismo.I have never had a problem.I love a freshly lubed clutch cable

Dennis, I've been using that luber for over 20 years, and I haven't had one yet that didn't leak! I found the trick is to keep re-adjusting the end of the cable in the tool until it leaks the least. FORGET the WD...use Tri-Flow! It's teflon based and makes the cable feel 10X smoother! Slick 50 spray works well too, but WD40 doesn't seem to last as long in the cable.
You also might try to lube the cable from the bottom. That worked for me quite a few times too.
Just make sure you have the cable end seated in the luber nice and tight, and wrap a rag around it if you have to. That should get you by.

Mine works great...never leak a drop! NOT. I'm right there with you, can't even tell if the lube is going down the cable housing. Glad to see I'm not alone...I second the recommendation to use Tri-Flow, very slick stuff. I've been using it on my bicycle for years.

Also try using brake cleaner first then tri-flow.

wrap the luber up in a rag as you lube it so at least it keeps the mess to a minimum.....

Just want to add my 2 cents. I use that wax based chain/cable lube for my cables and yes, they make a mess. I may try tri-flow. The teflon aspect is a good idea. RandyWFR-that's good advice about keeping it adjusted.

Hawaii-Rider--that signature line cracks me up! ("You know....thats gonna feel alot better when it quits hurtin") I think I'll use that one on the trail when one of my buddies crashes.

Some more ideas I thought of to check the leaks...don't push the little tube all the way into the luber. Sometimes it doesn't get a chance to go down into it and just comes back out the hole.
Sometimes when you tighten it down on the cable end, you may notice that it doesn't quite line up to evenly cover the cable. move it 'till it does, and this will stop a lot of the "spit back".

The best was when I (ignorantly) tried to "listen" at the other end of the cable for the sound of anything coming through. Alot of "shhhushhing" sound but nothing coming out.Oh, it came out alright. Right into my ear! DOH!!
Don't let it happen to you. :)

Thanks folks. Max almost had me down at the local Yamaha dealership again, spending more money.

Hawaii-Rider: Can they really ban you? Did you get the beer? Did the beer help? Was ya gonna write something nasty? Shame on you for having such thoughts...

randyWRF: I love it. My family calls me "Tim the tool man". Lately they've been thinking about calling me "Mr. Crash and Burn".
