Anyone ever ride with a mouth guard??? ...the kind boxers or football players use? I got a little too overconfident today, overjumped a table top, landed flat, G'd out and slammed my helmet's face mask into the handlebar crossbar on impact...pulling the strap up under my chin and slamming my jaw shut, almost bit my tongue off!! Yeh, I must of had my jaw dropped open as I watched the downhill landing ramp go underneath me.

I wore a Jofa mouth guard for a couple of years before they went to fullface helmets, unless you want to consider a Bell Star
Seriously though, I would think the mouthguard would impare breathing. I tried wrestling with one (had braces) and decided that hamburger mouth was better than not being able to breath.

Guy,
I wear a mouthguard when I ride...it is the kind that just goes over your top teeth (like the kind they use in Football) I have had my lip busted too many times (especially when I had braces) and decided to try a mouthguard. The only problem is that you tend to chew on it when you ride and it gives you a headache
but it serves its purpose and works well! I just ran the string through the grill on the front of my helmet, this way it stays connected to my helmet.
BTW What jump did you wreck on? Later,
Garrett

A friend won't ride without the mouth piece and ear plugs. The mouth piece doesn't seem to bother his breathing. He a 50+ OT Master that finishes in the top 5 in their 22 minute races.
I use the ear plugs but have not graduated to the mouth piece just yet.

I've been wearing a mouthguard for a couple of years. I started using it road racing because I would catch myself with my mouth open. Violent crashes tend to happen rather quickly, and sometimes you've hit the ground a few times before you catch up to what's going on.
I don't chomp down on it, so I haven't had any adverse effects (headaches).
Earplugs make you faster- I'M SERIOUS
