Hey gang,
What's up with the molded ring on the outside face of the front sprocket?
I can't seem to figure out what's its purpose in life is :)

Had the same thing on my 2001 WR426.
Don't worry about it. I just changed mine out and threw the old one away.

It's just there to reduce chain noise. You don't need it. (And I don't think it really does much anyways)

It is there for noise and vibration control. My XR650L has one on it also. It is not needed.
