Which bars to buy?

Recommended Posts

Hey Mike,

Got any thoughts on the Renthal McGrath bend bars? I have been toying with the Idea lately. I have bent way too many bars (Not in the last month though)to buy a set of million dollar pro-taper bars. The Moose bars I use have been ok (I bought them cause they're blue).

Renthal Jimmy Button highs. More room in the cockpit and easier to stand up.

I personally don't care for Pro-Tapers, they flex and don't give me the feedback from the front wheel that I want.

I just went over to my local shop and looked at a set of Buttons ($89.95) 110mm rise/62mm sweep vs the McGrath bars ($70.00)83mm rise / 57mm sweep.

The Buttons look like motocross "Ape Hangers" ? compared to the other bends I looked at. Kind of reminded me of something out of the movie "Easy Rider" :D. I think I'm going to try the McGrath bend and hope I didn't make a $70. mistake. :D

Bonzai... :D

I was using the McGrath bend, I'm 6'2". They were too low without using risers (turning the clamps upside down w/ scotts damper). Now I use the TAG T5 Cr double high w/ risers. Just about perfect, very similar to Button bend. The buttons look tall, but after riding Bill's bike, the ergonomics seemed fine for tall folks.

I wanted the extra strentgh so I got the TAG's. I've bent 4 or 5 renthals before and didn't want the expense of Pro-tapers (and the new damper brackets, etc).

If you want tall, the Button bend is the ighest out there. Otherwise use risers with your favorite sweep.

The Renthal McGrath bars and STOCK WR bars are shockingly quite similiar. This was pointed out to me after I bought the Mc bars.

Check out Renthal's websight for dimensions.

YAMAKAZI,

I wish I could help you on the bars, but there are just too many out there and I have never tried the McGrath bars. I would say if you can't stand comfortably, you probably need a taller bar. I rode a bike (wr) with the origonal bars and it almost forces you to sit, becuase it feels like the bar is in your lap. I instanly gained speed and agility by being able to stand all the time comfortably. It also helped reduce my forearm pump.

As a tall rider I also like the Jimmy B highs. I also modified my bars as Bill mentioned by trimming some off the ends although I can't remember the exact amount.

On a related note, has anybody installed acerbis ralley pro handgaurds onto their Jimmy B highs? I have heard various things from the local shops but nothing consistent(as I expected). Why is it so difficult to find a knowledgable shop ?)
