I was wondering it seems like everybody on the Thumpette boars rides either a KX100 or CRF230. Why? I used to own a CRF230F, but it was 2 slow for, then I got a YZ250F, but I was just wondering is there anybody who owns something else?

Me too, I've got a KTM200. Not technically a "thumpette" at all but I joined back in the days of my XR200 (almost 5 years ago! Wow)

Heyyyyy, what's wrong with a KX100? Hmmmph. Actually, I'm hoping to move up to a bigger bike by the summer. :applause:

There ya go. I love my bike, though I've tried tons of others, the only one that came close to tempting me was a CR125. If you were closer you could play with mine any time.

I ride a KTM 351 RFS (used to be a 250)...then, we found a sweet deal on an 02 YZ250 and I thought I'd give it a whirl (since I love riding motocross AND harescrambles).....got this bike and now I'm in love!!!! I still love my KTM on the trails, but on the track, there's no comparison! My YZ is spectacular!!!!

So....there are lots of options for us ladies...just gotta work your way up to some of them! :D

You ride your YZ in the harescrambles? What kind of mods have you done to it to make it more trail friendly? Or do you just use it for track? Hmmm, if that's the case, must be nice to have two bikes! :D

Nothing's wrong with it, it just seems like everybody on the Thumpette forum has that bike. Not that many of them ride 250F's or 450F's.

YZ250 2-stroke here for the trails. No mods just a sparky and suspension work. It's the best off-road bike I've ever ridden on the knarly stuff. Bikes I have had were KDX200, KTM200, ATK250, YZF250 and all worked well on the trails.

Wow, I'm impressed! With the way I felt like my KX100 was going to knock me off my rear at first, I can't imagine what a 250 2 stroke would feel like!

My friend Emilie has a YZ250, stock. It seems to work really well though there have been a few times neither she nor I had any luck getting it up this nasty little deadfall/root pile. It was mostly a gearing issue ... with different sprockets I think she'd have been fine. Oh, and she can go just about 34 miles before gas tank runs dry.

And actually, in some ways, the bigger the engine, the smoother it is ... there's MORE power, but it doesn't hit *quite* so abruptly.

I used to ride a CRF230 and it was kind of a pig. Even after we put aftermarket stuff on it to make it faster (pipe, rev box, etc.) it was still too heavy for what it put out. I ride a KTM 200 now and love it. Maybe you should think about something like that. The KTM is about 20 lbs lighter than the 230 and it is way more responsive in the corners, on the throttle, and the suspension kicks butt. :D

If your tall enough to get touch on a big bike get it. I'd guess that the KX100 and CRF230 are popular for 2 reasons:

1. Cheap
2. Low Seat height.

I usually tell people that are just learning or unsure of themselfs to make sure you can flat foot touch, pick the bike up easily and start it. I see a lot of people out there that are on bikes way too big for them. They end up tipping the bike over all day, can't start it on a hill, and if it falls over a couple times they are done for the day just from picking it up cause its too heavy for them.

Too many people worry about power first, I think you'll have more fun if you worry about ergo's first and buy the right type of bike. If you ride MX tracks get a MX bike. If you trail ride at slow speeds get a 4-stroke play bike. If you do a little of everything get a KTM 200EXC or something similar.

If your 5'2 105 pounds and like to ride fast, look at the new KTM 85SX. The quality looks much better than the jap bikes and seems a lot lighter.

Most important, have fun.

Cheers,

The problem with the mini and mid-size bikes, and the reason a lot of women move up off of them, is the ergos as much as the limited suspension and lack of ground clearance. Even if you're only 5'2", a KX100 still feels cramped to a lot of riders. The distance from footpeg to seat to handlebar is much shorter than a full size bike, and makes the standing/sitting transition tiring after a long day.

I remember for a while "it just seemed like" everyone on the forum had a 250F! Before the thumpette forum 'took off' and all the other women riders came out of the woodwork, that is! :D Myself, Kim250F, Christi20, a few others... all on 250Fs... a few others on different two strokes... fiep on anything over 250... just depends what you're focusing on, I suppose! But I'm curious, now, what are people riding? Might need a poll...

Anyway, I do think it has a lot to do with height... you have to be pretty comfortable with riding before being comfortable not touching the ground, and even then fighting with a kickstart on a bike you find hard to touch the ground, I imagine, is very frustrating... I imagine, I'm 5'10", so don't have to deal with that particular issue! :busted:
