The oil seal on the compression release shaft is leaking on my XL600.
I bought a new seal but can't get the shaft out. I have removed the tappet cover but don't see anything holding the shaft in. Please don't tell me I have to remove the head to get the compression release out. Any help out there?

I had to pull the motor in order to remove the cylinder head cover. This was necessary because there is a pin that keeps the compression release shaft in place. I am in no danger of beating flat rate, as one of the bolts broke off in the head as I was trying to remove it. AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!!

On the plus side, I can finally paint my motor and exhaust header.
