Recommended Posts

TT member brsmith was kind enough to send me photos of his 05 with the Clarke 2.8 natural tank. I told him if he would send them over to me I would post them for all of us to see.

Thanks, Smitty.......

The tank is from Clarke, and fits 03-04-05 250-450 with a 03-04 seat...The tank with the tape is the clarke with a 05 stock seat. Fits very nice.....The other pics are with a SDG tall seat... One also shows the difference, about 1.250" taller. The pic showing the big gap, is what happens when you try to use a stock 05 tank with the 03-04 SDG tall seat..SDG says it fits fine...as you can see it does not. As for the color...If you are a racer:thumbsup: , most like the clear so they can see how much fuel is in the tank. If you are a weekend warrior :snore:and like the stock look, blue is for you.. Hope the pics help Smitty

It uses the stock 05 wr shrouds.

If you need more help, pm me!!!

Thanks for supplying the pictures Mr. Smith. They will help me later on when I decide to make some changes to my '05. Right now all of the races and trail riding that I do I can do with the stock tank, but I might want to go to the tall seat now with the stock tank. Does SDG make an '05 tall seat for the '05 stock tank? Also, looking at your pics, I noticed the aftermarket top triple clamp. I didn't know anyone made one yet for the '05 WR, so what brand is it?

By the way, your Avatar makes it really hard to read!

I called SDG after I bought a 03-04 seat and they told me it would work... But as you can see it is not even close. After I told them about the problem, they told me making a seat for the 05 WR most likly would not happen. The cost of making the mold, compared to the number of seats sold. Not enough money to be made. As you can see the stock seat will work fine with the 03-04-05 tank, but the SDG won't with the stock tank. You might try Guts, other than that..who knows. As far as the top clamp goes, it was one I had on my 2001 YZ426. I had a machine shop bore the tube opening 2mm. And it bolted up just fine.. They charged me $40. each. I had two of them done, so if they only did one it might have been more (set up ect). A friend of mine just bought one for his 05 WR250F from BRP. It is top notch, very nice piece of work. www.brpit.com Hope this helps...Smitty:)

It's funny how we all have a different opinion on what color to get.. Personally, Natural is the only way to go.. Way trick and you could see how much gas you have. The only drag, my 3.1 IMS yellowed from using race gas, now it looks horrible..?

I'm just now learning what a waste getting a tank is for the 03-05 WRs... If you have an 03-04 WR and own or want to own a bigger tank, you're stuck with buying a 3 gallon tank.. That gives you a whopping .5 gallon of gas for about (give or take) 200 dollars.. ? But if you own an 05 and upgrade to the 3 gallon, your getting a whole gallon for the 200 dollars. I'm just not in love with any of them, the IMS with it's funky fuel routing and dual petcocks leaves more than a quart on the right side of the tank because the fuel is lower than the inlet of the carb, not to mention the tank rubs on the valve cover and the Clarke that only buys you a couple of quarts... I wish someone would come out with a nice single petcocked 4 gallon tank for the late model WRs... Then I'll be excited to buy one...

Smitty, the tank looks real nice.. ?

Perfect example.... The GYT-R from Yamaha is a 3.2 and costs 245.95, guys with 03/04 WRs have to pay 245.95 (for the gytr) for a couple of quarts of gas... Not really a lot of bang for your buck..

I dont know how you can call all of our 03/04 WR450 GYTR tanks 3.2 gallon when they are a true 3.4 gallon! The GYTR tanks for the 400/426 models are 3.2! ? I think it is a fair price for the tank! ? Now we know that OneLugNut has put it on a 05 WR450 with no problems! ?

If you really want to split hairs Indy, the Yamaha website says it's a 3.3, we're both wrong. I didn't really want to get into another pissing contest with you, I'm just saying, your bike already came with a 2.6 tank, to pay 245.00 for another tank is a lot of dough for small amount of gas you gain. I'm not impressed with any aftermarket tanks for 03 and up, NONE of them buy you all that much.. Back when the 98-02 the WRs had fat, stock tanks the aftermarket tanks gave you a much slimmer tank and actually improved the way you could ride the bike. Now, not so much, just a way to add some bling bling to your bike. So much money for so little gas...

No offense dude, but that tank is yellow from the factory... I have seen many natural tanks and they are more white than that... was that under yellow lights?? Just curious since I am int he market for a bigger tank for my YZ250...

Thanks for the info Mr. Smith. I had bought an Applied top clamp and it was exactly 2mm too small. I didn't even think about having it bored out to fit so I returned it. I think I'll just wait til all the companies start making a clamp for the '05.

Hey I don't care if a bigger tank gets me a cup of piss more gas. I've pushed my pig out of the woods from running out of gas. 1/2 a gallon will take you several miles on these four strokes. That can mean the difference in making it to the gas station or getting your cardio workout for the month. Hell I fill two 20 oz. Gatorade squeeze bottles just in case on some of our bushwhacks. (just don't take a sip, gas tastes REALLY bad.)

If the price tag is so harsh, sell your old tank on the used parts section of this site. Thats what I did, that thing sold in less than a day.

Who cares about color too. Natural is nice for at a glance fuel level. Blue is cool too for keeping the stock look. To each their own.

The bigger tanks kick ass. Shame on Yamaha and Honda for builing enduro/trail bikes with such pathetically small MX tanks.

Ewwww...I no like that tank. Our shop bike (05 WR450) has an IMS, and it is hands down better looking and better ergonomically. That thing looks like a dinosaur tank when compared to IMS.....and ours doesnt rub anywhere ? We used the OEM WR shrouds ? Maybe you guys had some bum tanks?

Why is the clarke yellowed already?

Ive never been a fan of the LOOKS or FEEL of clarke tanks. I love the IMS for the WR ?

Just got my ZipTY/Ims tank, with Zip Ty Petcock. Yes it needed yz shrouds for 04's. The Zip Ty pet cock is on the header side and approx 1" away. Got out and found the thing leaked on the header side, so pulled petcock applied more teflon tape. Then found the petcock got super hot and the tank was expanding on the header side, enough so that the YZ shroud mount near my knee was no longer flush with the tank but actually stickin out/off the tank about 1". I then used Moto-tile heat shield on the entire length of hose and petcock. Tank still expands on the header side, on a 75 degree day in AZ. I am not happy with the tank or Zipty petcock, I will be attempting to return it for fear of catching on fire. Plus I noticed the petcock doesnt turn off, gas continues to flow when it is supposed to be off, or in any position for that matter.

I agree with Dan not a lot of bang for the buck $$$$$. I have a 2 quart cross bar mounted jug from Maier for $30. I bought 2 years ago. I tried to purchase another one this last week but unfortunately they are discontinued. Either way $30 bucks got me to the same place around 3 gallons and I didnt catch on fire.

I just want gas to make those long rides, IMO the IMS is asking for trouble being that close to the header..............

After reading the onelugnut thread I decided to buy the Acerbis 3.3. Looks like it fits nice on the 05. I'll gain more than a gallon for around 200 dollars, I'm fine with it. Next weekend I'll need to go 150 miles before refueling, I'll probably carry a Gatorade just in case we make a wrong turn, sure wished I had a nice 4 gallon.
