Jeez, it looks like dumb Satch and stupid Thump have the same maintenance plan I used to wear out 3 aluminum rear sprockets and 2 fronts on my CR500 over a period of a year and a half with the same chain (which chain is STILL being used on that bike) and one rear on a YZ450F that I had to adjust twice now in the year I've had it. I must be as big an idiot as either of you. ?

Sure it's just a chain....which happens to be the critical item that actually places the power that your bike creates to the ground. But, it's just a chain.

A little of my own anecdotal data:

I got a chain from Vic Krause, (one that wasn't being advertized). This was a standard chain using chrome moly pins and bushings. After three years of motocross, many woods rides, and one arenacross and the chain is still less than 1% elongated from wear. Which means that the sprockets (aluminum rear) are completely intact and not one sign of wear.

Yes, the chain was constructed of top shelf materials (and very much overpriced) yet it is not the chain, as much as the care given it, that makes it last.

I'm not saying that getting a year out of a ring chain is a bad thing...I'm only saying that with proper maintenance, you can get more out of a standard chain.

The chain on the CR500 that has worn out 3 budget rear sprockets still measures out to well under 2% stretched. The sprockets did not wear in the classic hooked forward pattern caused by over-long chains because it's still an acceptable length. The sprockets wore because they are exposed mostly to sand and DG with very minimal lubrication. He's planning to toss the chain when it gets done with this next cog.

I think it's great that you can get that kind of service out of a regular chain, if you actually can (and I don't think you could in SoCal). I, frankly, have plenty of maintenance to do with 3 cars, 2 dirt bikes, 2 dogs, a house, a wife, and a 14 year-old that I simply don't want to be bothered with a miserable, messy, time-consuming task of cleaning, draining, lubing and drying and reinstalling my drive chains when I just plain don't need to.

Well GrayRacer like I said earlier in this thread I have RK's top of the line non-oring chain on my 05 YZ250. One of the posts earlier made reference to my "thumper with massive torque" in jest. I can assure you since all I have done is ride my YZ250 one time and that was to break it in, that massive torque has not been applied to my new RK chain. I have however adjusted the chain twice. I hope that after some initial stretch that it slows down.....I would hate to have to adjust it every moto........maybe I got spoiled by the o-ring chain?

As far as maintanece, the RK has been lubed twice while at the track...and it has not even been raced yet. What else does a guy have to do?? Bathe it at the track? LOL

wow and all this time i thought the d,i,d, erv-2 was a better chain!!!Now i see that i can buy a 59.00 ert from sirthump and do just as good as the chain and stealth sprocket i have now!However i will have to see if i can get 18 months out of a cheaper setup as i have done with the erv-2 To each his own but Ive got better things to do like ride!!!

Thanks for the plug! At this time I carry Ironman sprockets exclusively. Personally I run the Ironman/ERV-2 combo. I don't run them because I sell them (I also sold Sprcket Specialists, JT and Stealth as well as RK, EK, Moose, Renthal and Tsubaki at the same time that I acquired the Ironmans and the ERV-2), I run them because they are the most durable setup I've ever used. ? And for this reason I have absolutely no problem recommending them to other people. All of my riding buddies are now running Ironmans too, though most opted for chains less expensive than the ERV-2. I pay for my parts just like everyone else (though I pay wholesale those that I carry ? ), and in the chain/sprocket area the extra money for the most durable parts is well worth it in my book. ?

Lubing a chain every moto with the wrong lube can actually make things worse.

Using the right lube means very little time spent with chain care.

There is a price premium for the light weight design and warranty, you get what you pay for. If you want steel, don't care if it weighs 3#, then buy a JT for $20. If you want light weight, durability plus a one year guarantee then you're going to have to go for something like an Ironman.

No, if you're my customer and you ever have trouble with a warranty replacement, then come talk to me, the sprocket will be replaced. I have several customers who have had them replaced free, no questions asked. Actually I am unaware of any of my customers who have ever been denied replacements within the warranty period. If you're going to slander like that I expect to see some proof. Lets have it. Actually, start a new thread dedicated to Ironman warranty replacements if you like, I would love to see the results.

You know what, I'm calling you out on this one. I'm starting a new thread, look for it in the index "Ironman warranty replacements, your vote requested".

Satch, I am not here to sell chain lube. If I were, I would spam often, which I never have.

Also, anyone who knows chains realises that a ring chain needs lubrication every bit as much as a standard chain. Personally, I run standard chains in most instances and mount up a ring chain for the sloppy rides, which is what they are intended for.

sirthumpalot, I have NEVER slandered anyone or anything here. Perhaps you should point out the slander you speak of.

Your implication was clearly that Ironman will give you a hard time about replacing parts under warranty. My poll has shown exactly the opposite.
